Kaimuki Lions Club Kicks Off the Everyday Hero Awards

As a way to recognize the many unsung heroes in the Kaimuki community, the Kaimuki Lions Club has created the Everyday Hero award. Our first two recipients were given their awards for their unselfish attitudes and going above and beyond in their actions to make Kaimuki a better place to live. (Photo at left; Kaimuki Lion President Yoshio Ono, Everyday Hero Robert Ostrowski, & HawaiiUSA Federal Credit Union Kaimuki Branch Manager Toby LaBoy)

The Kaimuki Lions Club's first Everyday Hero was Robert Ostrowski, who was honored for his meticulous work November 18, 2008, as groundskeeper, at the Kaimuki Community Park, and for his random acts of kindness to children and the elderly. The Hawaii USA Federal Credit Union Kaimuki Branch partnered with the Kaimuki Lions Club to honor Mr. Ostrowski, upon requests from appreciative Kaimuki community residents.

The second Everyday Hero honored by the Kaimuki Lions Club March 17, 2009 was Mrs. Julia E. McCullen, retired teacher from Queen Lydia Lili'uokalani Elementary School. Many Kaimuki residents have expressed appreciation of the beauty of the new fence, school sign and Hawaiian Garden landscape at the school's corner by Waialae Avenue and Koko Head Avenue. This project was completed through the leadership and generosity of Julia McCullen and her fifth grade class ohana of ten years ago. She is also the teacher who wrote the grants for the school's mural of Queen Lili'uokalani and the school's ten Hawaiian quilts. Both projects involved the entire school ohana. Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

“Ganbei!” is the term I was looking for when I toasted the Honolulu Chinatown Lions. The word escaped me after repeat bouts of drinking the provided brown H2O (the beverage from Tennessee in a bottle that has a black label “No.7”). What eventually came out was simply “Cheers”, and that’s if you’re thinking Hong Kong, China, courtesy of the British. See even more photos from Steven Yoshimura's collection!

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

Ah, March 26, 2009 was the date that my liver was being tested at the Empress Restaurant - Chinese Cultural Plaza. The Chinatown Lions were there to administer this high octane barrage. But, why not? It’s their 36th Charter Night Anniversary! President Cy Feng and Bob Lee kept filling my cup, and at every opportunity, glasses (white cup with stuff) were raised in unison. PDG Ernie Chang’s CIS Mary offered me a fine glass of French wine. Sadly, I had to decline as my taste buds were whacked and enjoying a sample would be best served to others. However, I did get to take 1/3 the bottle home for a later opportunity. WOOHOO! Thanks Mary!

With cheery Lions on deck, the celebration was in full swing. Members from several different clubs were in attendance including a number of Roosevelt High School Leos. Very few clubs invite a Lion Dance troupe, though it seemed like second nature to have them present here in Chinatown. The Kuo Min Tang Physical Culture Association showed up with 2 of these beasties. Both District Governor Shannon Ching and Prexy Cy Feng had their “lacie” (Chinese red envelope, usually stuffed with cash) baited bamboo sticks at the ready, luring in each Lion.

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

These guys were pretty good; because they did the head lift where the Lion stretched upwards towards the ceiling. Most routines I’ve seen did not include aerials, unless Jackie Chan was in them. Well, this set the precedence for the rest of the evening. I’m all good…and lots of “cheery!” PDG Ernie Chang was also groovin’ especially showing off his ORIGINAL Chinatown Lions shirt…from four decades ago! It looked like it was in mint condition and all so spiffy.

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

Moving along, invocation was said by Reverend Douglas Ah Hee, shortly followed by a bevy of Chinese cuisine. On the menu…Bird Nest Soup, Asian Chicken Salad, Oyster Sauce Chicken, Seared Mushrooms, Chow Mein Noodles, Steamed Sea Bass, and Garlic Head-on Shrimp. Click on the photo to enlarge!

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

So we’re fed and liquored up, then the formalities begin. Honored Charter members got their share in the limelight. Surprisingly, they are mobile, live, and kickin’! Shown here by at least raising a “shaka” sign for yours truly. Good Deal!

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

Other speakers were up at the podium, and then I got my turn. Draggin’ my white cup of “stuff”, I made my way up and with grand gesture, “Cheers!” Ok, really I was there to award Lion Steven Yoshimura (head honcho wrangler of the RHS Leos), the “Na Maka ‘o Liona” (The Eyes of the Lion) pin. It was his 2nd pin award. Having the Leos at bay, keeps his stories and photos deep in resource. Any Hawaii Lion can earn this award. Check out more information here!

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

The Entertainment continued with several ladies performing Tibetan and Chinese dances. This was a surprise and certainly cultural worthy. I was drawn in by the colors of the costumes, which were in contrast to the Lion gold-purple-blue combination.

Honolulu Chinatown Lions 36th Charter Night

After all was said and done, “Hawaii Aloha” was the closing song, performed A la harmonica. That’s right, a first for me to bear witness to this (at a Lions function). Lions Tit K. Chun, and Clifford Wong belted out that tune.

Please Chinatown Lions, automatically renew my RSVP at your next gig, I’ll be there with camera in hand! Uh…but have No.7 readily available…(Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster Irwin Santos - Kamehameha, Additional photos by Steven Yoshimura - Chinatown)

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 3 - Final Day

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 3 - Final Day

We wake up, pack and head over to the Mitchell Pauole Center to have breakfast and say goodbye to our Molokai friends.  We always look forward to a great breakfast with eggs, spam, rice and extra food from Friday and Saturday night.  Today, there is a special treat, Jackie Cushman’s fried rice!  Wow, Jackie makes a great dish of fried rice!  Wonder if that is going to become a tradition?

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 3 - Final Day

We make plans with RC David Sakoda and Dr. Cedric Mitsui to meet up and tour the island before we leave.  We pick up David and Cedric and head over to the Kalaupapa lookout and the Phallic rock.  David touches the rock but Cedric decides it’s a good idea to opt not to be fertile.

We then head over to the Coffee Shop, the Kite Factory and the White Sand Beach.  We end our tour together at a lunch at the Kitchen.  We talked about how wonderful our trip to Molokai was and discussed our plans to return.  Lion friends depart … to three different islands; Oahu, Maui and Hawaii.

Isn’t it wonderful that we have Lions Clubs on each island?  We look forward to seeing each other again at our District Convention. Click the PLAY button to Start the slide show. (Story, Photos & Slideshow by PDG Cecelia Izuo - Pali)

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Charter Night

We again head over to the Mitchell Pauole Center this time for the actual Charter Celebration. More Lions are in attendance this evening as they eagerly await the delicious luau food and the induction of their two new members by PDG Ernest Chang. We chat as we wait for the dinner to start.

My right calf is now hurting. We share the story of our walk with the other Lions. We feel like we had just finished the Honolulu Marathon. Dinner consisted of Kalua Pork, Lomi Salmon, Chicken Long Rice, rice, poi, and poki. Clarence and I are starved after all that exercise! Click the PLAY button to Start the slide show.

After dinner, ZC Jackie Cushman reads a letter from International Director Maurice Kahawaii. Region Chairperson David Sakoda gives his best wishes to all and congratulates the Molokai Lions Club. PID Mel Nakamura presents his keynote speech. He speaks about the wonderful projects of the Molokai Lions Club emphasizing their vision screening. He also spoke about the 50th charter of the Molokai Lions Club and how the pavilion was full with people at that celebration. This evening the pavilion is only half full.

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Charter Night

PDG Ernest Chang inducts Lions Hiro and Eriko Takeuchi. The program ends with Lions congratulating Hiro and Eriko. An open invitation is given for all to join the after party gang at Jackie and Bill Cushman’s home for PDG George Nakamura’s famous Miso Soup.

It is a little difficult for us to find the home in the dark but the Cushmans gave us good directions. They have a beautiful home that they built with a very spacious kitchen and living room. “Uncle George’s” soup is delicious as ever. We have a great time chatting and eating (AGAIN!) Then at 9:30 pm it’s time to get back to our room. (Story, Photos & Slideshow by PDG Cecelia Izuo - Pali)

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Kalaupapa Tour

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Kalaupapa Tour

We get up at 7:00 am so we can check in at the Mule Rider’s office. They were responsible for obtaining our sponsorship to Kalaupapa. You see, you cannot just visit Kalaupapa. You must be sponsored and you must be over 16 years old to spend the time there.

We leave Molokai Shores at 7:30 and sitting outside our door are walking sticks loaned to us by ZC Jackie and Bill Cushman. Jackie and Bill used them when they walked down to induct 4 new Lions into the Kalaupapa Lions Club. Click the PLAY button to Start the slide show.

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Kalaupapa Tour

Clarence checks in for us and we are on our way down the trail to Kalaupapa. The trail is long and the goal is to get down before the mule riders because of what the mules leave behind. I am a slow walker, and several groups of youngsters pass us up. We see a worker from downside RUNNING up.

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Kalaupapa Tour

We are treated to one of the most spectacular sites we could feast our eyes on: a beautiful rainbow stretching from the top of the Pali to the sparkling blue ocean. We also could view the tiny village down below. The thought of Father Damien walking up and down the Pali to bring in supplies for his “beloved lepers” crosses my mind.

We just pass the 13th out of 26 switch backs when the mules start coming. There are about 8 riders on the mules along with their guide. Now we have to be more careful about where we place our feet as we walk along the trail. It is such an experience to walk through the forest and hear the baby billy goat crying, the birds chirping, the winds rustling through the trees and the waves crashing on the shoreline down below.

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Kalaupapa Tour

We reach the bottom of the trail at 10:00am just in time to catch the tour bus. That took us 2 hours. Oh yea, and that took a bottom portion of my walking shoes. Our tour guide is Norman Soares. Norman is from Kailua, Oahu. I taught Norman’s granddaughter at St. Anthony’s School. Of course, Norman rescues me with some strapping tape. Dr. Cedric Mitsui from the Waiakea Lions Club joins us. This was Lion Cedric’s first tour of Kalaupapa; he caught the plane.

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Kalaupapa Tour

On our tour, we stop at Blessed Mother Marianne’s tomb, and then we headed over to the museum shop, bought a lot of books and postcards there, and got an ice-cream at the store that doubles as a bar after 4:00 p.m.

The next stop was the newly renovated St. Francis Church where we were allowed to walk around the premises. After that we head for Kalawao where Father Damien’s St. Philomena Church is located. The serenity and beauty of Kalawao overwhelms me. I feel like I’m walking on sacred grounds.

We have lunch at the end of the road, and then stop at St. Philomena’s Church which is currently being renovated. Unfortunately, we could not visit the remains of Father Damien’s house because it was off limits due to the renovations. It is now time to head back. The walk and tour was a good prelude to our trip to Belgium and Rome in October to witness the canonization of Father Damien.

Now for the walk back up. We were told that the walk up was easier than the walk down. What they really meant was that the walk up was easier on the knees than th

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 2 - Kalaupapa Tour

walk down. They didn’t tell us that the walk up was going to be so grueling. We didn’t have the tour to look forward to so the adrenaline wasn’t kicking in. We had to think of some goals to set to get us motivated to continue the walk.

One of my goals was to reach the bench that was half way through the trail. We also set smaller goals as we aimed to reach the various switchbacks. We decided that we would rest at each 5th switchback. Then we noticed that the distance and the severity of the walk between switchbacks were not equal. We stopped at 25, 22, 20, 17, 15, 13 yeah finally hit the bench. Now we just have half way more to go!

We did make it, of course, but walking up took us 2 hours and 45 minutes. I sure was glad that walk was over. We felt like celebrating but we had to get back, take a shower and get ready for the Molokai Lions Charter Night. (Story, Photos & Slideshow by PDG Cecelia Izuo - Pali)

Molokai Lions Club 70th Charter Celebration Day 1

We all met at the Mitchell Pauole Center in Kaunakakai to share in appetizers of venison and fish. The main meal consisted of salads, shoyu chicken, and delicious desserts. This evening of getting reacquainted with long time friends of Molokai starts with door prizes. The fun continues with bingo and ends with a silent auction. Many wonderful donations are given for the auction from the Molokai community and from Lion members. The Molokai High School Leos are very visible as they help with door prizes.

The Molokai Lions offer several alternatives for us visitors, we could go to Halawa Valley, go fishing or travel down to Kaulapapa. Since Clarence and I are planning to attend the canonization of Father Damien, we opted to take the tour of Kaulapapa and Kalawao. This is about our 7th tour but we learn something new each time. We have always flown into Kaulapapa but this time we decided to be adventurous and do the walk. We received advise from those who have done the 3.2 mile hike into Kaulapapa. Afghanistan Bon Voyage Party for Lion Jim & Gary

Afghanistan Bon Voyage Party for Lion Jim & Gary

ALALALALALALALA! I couldn’t get this Middle East battle cry out of my head after our Bon Voyage party for Lions Jim Bryan and Gary Bowersox (photo at left with KHNL Weekend News Anchorwoman & fellow Kamehameha Lion Diane Ako). March 24, 2009 would make a memorable evening in my books as something that was unique. Like being in Vegas and staying at the Paris Hotel without traveling to France. Read on my friends…

Afghanistan Bon Voyage Party for Lion Jim & Gary

The evening had an exquisite touch from the hands of Lion “Bad Lori” Yamada. She themed the dinner and room aesthetics with an Afghanistan feel, giving the rest of the club, including many invited guests a taste of what Jim & Gary will experience. Attendees were greeted by “Virgins”…yeah right…

Afghanistan Bon Voyage Party for Lion Jim & Gary

Anyway, fine touches were laden here and there throughout the Saint Louis Alumni meeting hall, such as the house pupu featuring pistachio nuts, dried apricot and dates! Lion Mel Tom also played doorman for those that wish to enter. Holding two Punjab swords gives you that authority…and yes, they were authentic.

Afghanistan Bon Voyage Party for Lion Jim & Gary

A nice bonus came along too when PID Mel Nakamura presented Kamehameha Lions Club FOUNDATION President Alvin Sasaki with a check for $5000! Courtesy of a grant from Lions Club International. A major push came from Past International President Kay K. Fukushima who has heard of Region IV Chair Jim Bryan's Afghan plight and greased the wheels of LCIF for funding. WOOHOO!

Afghanistan Bon Voyage Party for Lion Jim & Gary

Time to eat, and in Afghan style, you used your fingers as utensils. Guests were asked to wipe their hands with provided towels and guided to the buffet table. Our “Virgins” (I’m chuckling as I write this), fronted the line and poured a stream of water with a hint of lemon to cleanse each diner's palms.

Afghanistan Bon Voyage Party for Lion Jim & Gary

The feast included the following; Grilled Beef & Chicken Afghani Style, Naan Bread w/Butter, Pita Bread with Hummus, Tomato & Cucumber Salad, Fresh Grapes, Cantaloupe, Watermelon, and Green Tea. All finger food and certainly a unique dining experience! I put my request in for fresh camel at the last meeting but I guess Lions Lori & Dean couldn't find any.

As we ate, the presentation of the night was from Gary Bowersox’s Award Winning documentary DVD “The Gem Hunter in Afghanistan.” Find out more on this DVD here. You can also learn further about Lion Gary by visiting his website!

We all wish Lions Jim & Gary a safe return. By the way, I taught Jim how to dodge bullets. (Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster Irwin “Superman” Santos – Kamehameha)

Molokai Weekend with the VDG2B

Molokai Weekend with the VDG2B

The Molokai weekend started Friday with a fun night of great food, fellowship and games of bingo. However, a few Lions did not get enough of the fun as a party started in Lion Bob Lee’s (Chinatown) room. With PDG Ernie Chang (Chinatown) and PDG George Nakamura (Koolaupoko) pouring the Scotch and beer and serving up the sashimi, roast pork and char siu, it made for an interesting Fun Night the sequel. (Photo at left; statue of Father Damien deVuester - Saint to be)

Molokai Weekend with the VDG2B

On Saturday morning Lions Ron Bauman and Bill and Jackie Cushman played tour guide, with a crew of Lions in tow, exploring the East side of Molokai with scenic views and many religious sites (churches). The night ended with the Charter Dinner and another amazing spread of ono grindz. Being an amateur photographer, no pictures of Fun Night or the Charter Dinner. (Photo at right of Kalaupapa)

Molokai Weekend with the VDG2B

Sunday concluded the Molokai weekend with a delicious breakfast fit for a King. This was a fitting end in that we were all treated like kings the whole weekend. After the breakfast, a few Lions had additional time on our hands before our flight back to reality and visited the Kalaupapa Lookout. The view was spectacular and enticed me to visit that part of the island on my next trip to the “Friendly Island”. (Photo at left - "THEY CAME TO SERVE")

All in all, great weekend. For Lions that want to get away for a brief period, the Molokai Charter Celebration is a great way to do it. The next one is only a year away, start planning. (Story & Photos by Treasurer Chris Tamura - Pearl City)

Molokai Lions 70th Charter Celebration Prelude

Molokai Lions 70th Charter Celebration Prelude

When the Molokai Lions commemorated their 70th Charter celebration on Saturday, March 21, 2009, it also marked for me the resumption of an annual trip to Kaunakakai with my “roomies”- PDGs Ernest Chang (Chinatown) and George Nakamura (Koolaupoko) (photo at left). This had become for me and my CIS Pamela, a celebration of friendship with not only our roomies, but also with the Lions of Molokai and their CIS’s. We were saddened by the cancellation of last year’s celebration, and waited eagerly for their 70th anniversary this year.

Our annual pilgrimage to Molokai always begins at the Honolulu commuter terminal with a meeting of the “bar”. As PDG’s George and Ernie and I assembled at the counter, all three of us were asked for our ID’s, a joke we thought until we had to show our licenses. No card, no beer.

Molokai Lions 70th Charter Celebration Prelude

Upon arrival at Hoolehua Airport, we were greeted by Lions Jackie and Carol who handed our charter T-shirts and tickets. We then picked up our rental car and drove to the Molokai Shores and check-in. Arriving after 3:30pm, required a “late check-in” leaving us to find our keys in a box. It was onwards to another annual tradition – shopping at Misaki’s store for PDG George’s Miso soup ingredients.

Flying in Friday, allowed the “Three Amigos” to attend the Funfest held that night by the Molokai Lions. We were treated to “ono” grilled venison and kole for pupus at the Mitchell Pauole Center. After dinner, the Molokai High School LEOS continued the evening with bingo. The big winner for the night – PDG Mervin Wee (Hawaii Kai) who literally went home with the bread (lots of Kanemitsu bakery bread!). It was so much fun that I didn’t have time to take photos of the event!

Molokai Lions 70th Charter Celebration Prelude

On Saturday morning, Molokai Lions Bill & Jackie Cushman and Ron Bauman took visiting Lions on a van tour of the East End of Molokai. On the trip, we visited a couple of churches built by Father Damien and turned around at the top of Halawa Valley. PID Mel Nakamura (Manoa Waioli) and PDG Mervin Wee took part in the tour, along with Lions Chris Tamura (Pearl City), David Sakoda (Haleakala) and myself. The tour ended with plate lunches at Manae Goods and Grindz. Thanks to Lions Bill, Jackie & Ron for a great trip!

The Charter celebration was held on Saturday night, with a dozen visiting Lions from eight clubs throughout the District. Among those in attendance were Lions Clarence and PDG Cecelia Izuo, who had hiked in and out of Kalaupapa earlier that day. Also from the Pali Lions Club were Lion Dan Motohiro and CIS Ethel. Waiakea was represented by Lion Dr. Cedric Mitsui, who will be assigned a guide on his next trip.

Molokai Lions 70th Charter Celebration Prelude

The program for the evening included a congratulatory speech from PID Mel Nakamura, and the induction of two new members, Lions Hiro & Eriko Takeuchi, by PDG Ernest Chang. The evening ended at the Cushman home, with the now traditional bowl of Miso soup made by PDG George Nakamura (no pictures again because I was too busy eating the soup!).

The charter celebration ended on Sunday morning with the annual brunch held at Pauole Center. After a quick breakfast and saying our fond Alohas, the “Three Amigos” left Hoolehua Airport on Island Air, having completed another Molokai charter together and looking forward to the next. West Maui Lions Club First Birthday Party

West Maui Lions Club First Birthday Party

On March 22nd the West Maui Lions Club celebrated their first birthday party. This is a very special event for any new Lions Club because it means that they survived a year of growing pains. Charter members are like sponges trying to soak up all the knowledge they can about Lionism. They establish a unique identity from all other Lions Clubs yet are committed to community service like all Lions Clubs. Some members will not fit in and be dropped while new perspective members will be attracted to form a lasting relationship that often lasts a lifetime.

West Maui Lions Club First Birthday Party

A good indicator of a healthy club is if they can put on a good party and the West Maui Lions Club did just that. 40 Lions members from Central Maui made the trek to the West side and were treated to an all-you-can-eat prime rib buffet dinner at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel's Mixed Plate Restaurant (Click on the photo at right to zoom in!). Not to be out done by Lion Irwin at the Halawa Lions Club Charter Night, I attached a picture of my loaded plate. The herb crusted kiawe roasted prime rib was awesome.

West Maui Lions Club First Birthday Party

After dinner, there was singing, door prizes, and a live auction. I was then honored to present Lion President Dennis Elms with a brand new engraved gavel to run his meetings. The club had been using a gavel that belonged to the Kihei-Wailea Lions Club. That club closed a couple years ago but under the guidance of Lion Jackie Yamamoto and Lion Bob Lee, it is hoped that the club will regroup before the district convention and the gavel can go back to it's rightful owner.

To all the members of the West Maui Lions Club we wish you a very happy first birthday with many more years of fun, fellowship, leadership development and service to others in need. You have reinvigorated the zone with fresh new ideas and energy in addition to filling an important community service void on the west side. Halawa Lions Club 4th Annual Charter Night "Backwards Birthday"

Halawa Lions Club 4th Annual Charter Night "Backwards Birthday"

Of the 3 Charter Nights (Molokai, Mililani, and Halawa) this weekend, Lois (a.k.a. Karen) and I headed on over to the Waiau District Park to join the Halawa Lions. Their 4th Annual Charter Night titled “Backwards Birthday” was cleverly crafted. January 23, 2006 was the actual day. However, we celebrated on 3/21. Get it? Read on, take a look see…there's also additional photos from Paul Kudo.

Amongst the festivities, the induction of a new member is always nice, not to mention memorable. Lion Jenyliz Ventura became one with the Halawa’ns. She had the honor of welcoming outside club guests, including Region IV Chair Jim Bryan who presided over the ceremony.

Halawa Lions Club 4th Annual Charter Night "Backwards Birthday"

Recently, several clubs have been catching on to having raffles with cool prizes donated by club members and supportive business associates. Here is an item that I thought was “cute.” It was a stuff moo-cow in a pur-ty coffee cup. When I first looked at this, I missed the MP3 player that was sitting in there and didn’t stick my ticket in the kitty. Bummer. Actually, after all our "lucky" numbers were called, we struck out! Auwe!

Halawa Lions Club 4th Annual Charter Night "Backwards Birthday"

Anyway, taking home a nice container filled with food was a worthwhile consolation. Grinds were provided by Ige’s Halawa, KLC. We...(mainly "I") gorged on Tender Roast Pork, Crispy Fried Chicken, and may spring rolls dipped in the Sweet Thai Chili Sauce. Yummy! Click on the photo to get a SUPER ZOOM SHOT of my plate!

Halawa Lions Club 4th Annual Charter Night "Backwards Birthday"

The Aiea High School Leos Club was also present and funds raised from Charter night went to support their cause. The crew participated handing out birthday cake and were slaving as prize runners to lucky recipients.

Halawa Lions Club 4th Annual Charter Night "Backwards Birthday"

Now these Aiea Leos had reigning officers of the district. Royalty present, we have (Photo at left) President Mareaux Medri, Vice President Jocelyn Lansangan, and Secretary Leslie Ragma. That’s pretty good numbers for a single source to have most officers within. There are 38 Leos Clubs throughout the State of Hawaii.

It was a nice evening, so nice…that Region IV Zone 2 Chair Duane Fujiwara whipped out recyclable shopping bags with “I – HEART – HA – HEART – A – LIONS”. Each of the members got a token bag to show off to the world.

Congratulations on your 4th Halawa Lions!! Thank you for having us there…(Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster Irwin Santos – Kamehameha, additional photos from Paul Kudo - Pearl City)

American Diabetes Association’s Step Out to Fight Diabetes

The Roosevelt High School Leo Club assisted the American Diabetes Association with its Step Out to Fight Diabetes fundraising walk and health fair, held at Kapiolani Park on 21 March 2009. On 20 March, the Leo Club helped prepare for the walk by unloading vehicles at the Kapiolani Bandstand and prepared 3000 goody bags that would be distributed to walkers at the finish line.

On the day of the event, Leo Club members assisted with decorations, putting up signs, manning a water point, distributing refreshments to volunteers, distributing goody bags and water at the finish line and cleanup following the event. The American Diabetes Association raised approximately $500,000 from this event. (Story & Photos by Steven Yoshimura - Chinatown)

Molokai Lions Vision Screening Project

Molokai Lions Vision Screening Project

MOLOKAI LIONS ROAR...March 2-3, 2009 were the two days designated to vision screen all the K through 8th graders on Molokai. All 4 public elementary schools, Aka'ula and Molokai Middle School participated in this program. All students that returned a permission form to their respective schools were screened free of charge by one of two optometrists. Doctors Karsten Lee and Michael Leong came from Maui along with their optometric technicians Leilani Ramos and Lei Fujishiro-Kinchoy. It is important to note that these two doctors and their staff funded their own way to Molokai..... they also give up two days of their private practice to volunteer their time and service. (Photo above left, Doctor Michael Leong and Doctor Karsten Lee with two students from Kualapuu School)

The children received a more extensive screening than the Lions Club was ever able to provide. The Molokai Lions Club hosted this group in private homes for the two nights, provided dinners and breakfasts for their stay and also provided island wide transportation to the schools. The Lions Club arranged all the scheduling of the school visits with the principles and staff of each school. Thanks go to all the schools for their co-operation in making this program so successful.

More than 600 children were screened and over 30 children were found to have possible vision impairment. The doctors will be sending referrals for these children back to the schools for the health aids to follow through with a contact to the parents.

Molokai Lions Vision Screening Project

Special thanks to Lydia Trinidad, principle of Kualapuu Elem., and Janice Espirito, principle of Kaunakakai Elem., for the lunches served to the entire team of twelve volunteers (4 professionals and 8 Molokai Lions). Region III Social at Ford Island - "In the Midst of a Storm"

Saturday, March 14, 2009, the Civil Defense was warning the public: flood advisory due to the heavy rains. The torrential rain extended island-wide. The coastal areas were subjected to high surf. With this alert, some of the Lions of Region 3 were at a quandary: should they attend the Ford Island picnic scheduled at 11 am? Yes we did!

Lion CareyAnne Ichimura of the Pali Lions took the helm in planning the Ford Island picnic as a Region 3 social. Lions, their families and their friends from Kahaluu, Kaneohe, Koolaupoko, Pali, Ala Moana, Honolulu Metro, and Waikiki 2000 gathered at the historical Ford Island at a site near the entrance of the USS Missouri Memorial. Lion Cliff Wakatake of the Ala Moana Lions was able to secure the location for the Lions. Lion Cliff created an atmosphere of a luau by adorning the columns of a covered Lanai with palm fronds, and covering the tables with multi-colored tablecloths.

Region III Social at Ford Island - "In the Midst of a Storm"

Region 3 social began with a warm welcome by Region Chair Agnes Tani. Recognized were DG Shannon Ching, and CIS Lion June, PDG Toku Tani, PDG Cecelia Izuo and CIS Lion Clarence. To show the “classy” nature of this picnic, leis were bestowed upon the “guests.”

Each of the clubs contributed pupu ranging from a delectable tofu salad to spicy edamame to spam musubi to manapua. Other snacks such as peanuts and shrimp chips completed the pupu serving. Following the pupu, was a gourmet meal catered from Lion Dean Matsushima of the Ala Moana LC; our menu included broiled steak, bar b que hot dogs, spicy chicken, green salad, and rice. Oh, so ono and so much food! Lion Ron Ushijima and CIS Agnes arranged the food line. Dessert included homemade bread baked by Lion Shirley Kaluhiwa from Kahaluu Lions; the Lions also purchased a delicate white cake.

Region III Social at Ford Island - "In the Midst of a Storm"

After the meal, a historical game (quiz) was given to everyone. The topics covered Ford Island, USS Arizona, USS Missouri, and the Pacific Aviation Museum. The “quiz” was meaningful to the participants as they were in the historical sites. Door prizes were drawn – the abundance of prizes, i.e., paper towels, toilet paper, dish washing detergent with sponge, floral arrangements etc. Left over steak, hot dog, cakes were also prizes to be won.

Region III Social at Ford Island - "In the Midst of a Storm"

Region 3 picnic turned out to be a sunshiny affair amid the storm on Oahu. Everyone had an enjoyable time – the company was great, the food gourmet, the prizes abundant, and the weather semi-perfect for a picnic. For most of the Lions, it was a privilege to have a picnic on a historical landmark. Afterwards, a few of us Lions headed to the Pacific Aviation Museum to complete our field trip to Ford Island. For anyone who has not taken the opportunity to watch the annual Honolulu Festival Parade, you are missing out on a beautiful array of vivid colors that will keep your visionary senses going crazy for a few hours!

Trying to find the group of D50 Lions I was to march with became a slightly difficult task initially. The usually bright gold and purple colors we wear seemed pale compared to the vibrant spectrum of yellows, blues, reds, green, turquoises, purples and on and on. The Asian participants (mostly from Japan) seem to choose only the most appealing shades of colors for their mu’u mu’u and flower lei. Kalakaua Avenue takes on a totally different look as your view of the long parade route becomes a feast for your eyes.

The parade on Sunday seemed to be extra colorful this year and as I viewed my pictures, I realized why. It WAS extra colorful this year!

Coming Soon

I decided to walk back to Nike Town since I live close by there but I also wanted to take pictures of each group participating in the parade to get a sense of the palette of colors being used that day. The results can be seen n the pictures! What a delightful walk it was. As I neared the end of the walk back, a light rain began to fall on the several groups who were still waiting to enter the parade line. No one seemed to mind as the refreshing mist was enough to cool everyone off without causing any damage to the costumes or props.

To top off the delightfully fun walk with fellow Lions of District 50, I was treated to a most spectacular view when I entered my apartment! An absolutely gorgeous rainbow was magnificently posed in the sky in front of me. One end seemed to be planted in the buildings beyond the Ala Wai Canal while the other end seemed rooted somewhere in the vicinity of the parade route! This was truly the most wonderful array of colors I was seeing which brought a perfect ending to another great Lions experience….in living color! (Story & Photos by Donna Tamasese)

A Rainy Day Project?

Sunday morning was looking more ominous than bright as I looked out from my lanai to both Manoa Valley and towards Hawaii Kai. After some drenching downpours on Saturday, I wondered if our scheduled Drain Stenciling Project would be able to go on as scheduled, as the Ala Wai was a murky brown and many areas around my place still seemed saturated with excess water.

Driving over to the arranged meeting place at Damien High School, I continued to notice wet ground all over and hoped that the project would not be cancelled again!! An eager group of Leos were already waiting for the school gate to be opened and here and there among them were several members of our Lions Club, not looking as eager as the young men! There was also one parent who came to help…even with a cast on his arm!

Coming Soon

We made our way inside to get ready and in a few minutes, Alan, the C & C person in charge of working with our group for the project arrived. He had already been to the Downtown area (where our project was to be completed) and announced that the ground there was still too wet for stenciling. He added that the high buildings would prevent the sun from drying out the sidewalks for several hours. He suggested we just re-schedule…again!

Coming Soon

Oh no, I thought, we can’t do this to these young Leos who were so ready to do the project today. Canceling twice was not a good thought! As President, I stepped up and said that if we couldn’t do the project, we would have to at least feed the Leos. Thanks to the quick-thinking resourcefulness of the Leos Advisor, Jean Ota, things quickly took a positive turn. She suggested that the Leos do the Clean-up Project that they were supposed to do anyway. They had the bags and gloves and were prepared to clean-up in the school-Bishop Museum-School Street-Houghtailing Street area. By the time the clean-up was completed, the food would be at the school.

Coming Soon

During this time, the sun had been slowly inching its way higher in the bright sky and we noticed that the driveway area of the school was noticeably drier than when we arrived. So all of a sudden, Advisor Jean quickly asked if we could stencil around the same area that the clean up would occur in? Alan quickly surveyed the area and agreed that it seemed like stenciling in the school area could certainly occur. Advisor Jean had already mapped out routes and work groups for the Leos and our Lion members quickly divided themselves among the four groups of Leos. The work forces were ready to begin. Picking up the stenciling and cleaning supplies the Leos and Lions were promptly out of the school area starting their tasks for the day.

Coming Soon

The plastic bags were quickly filled with lots of trash that somehow accumulates in areas that it should not be in. As the four groups walked along the streets they were (supposed) to be on, they found the storm drains and set to task with their brushes, stencils and paint and made quick work of getting the drain areas stenciled. As the work teams made their way around the school area, the sun was rising in heat and location. By the time everyone arrived back at the school, they were sweaty and showed the efforts of their work around that area of Kalihi.

When the ice water and lunches arrived, everyone was ready to grind! An ono B-B-Q chicken lunch with rice and mac salad really hit the spot after accomplishing a project that was going to be canceled for the day! Everyone took some time to relax cool off and just talk story in a shady area on the school grounds. Thanks to the efforts of Advisor Jean, 13 energetic Leos, a very supportive parent, a C & C advisor and 12 happy Lions, we had made short and profitable work of the rainy day project that was NOT canceled!

Leeward Oahu Lions Club’s Lion Phillip De Silva Chicken Fundraiser

Posted March 17, 2009

Coming Soon

Leeward Lions and Waipahu Leos and their advisors Mr. Mow and Mr. Takasaka, supported by Lions Chris Tamura, Paul and Alice Kudo, Brian Okimoto, Gerald Hirata of Pearl City Lions, Lion Wendell Hosea of Aiea Lions, Lion Eddie Uemori’s and Lion Bobby Balais’s family members spent most of the day cooking chicken in Waipahu on Saturday, March 14, 2009. The annual fundraiser is named in honor of our very own, the late Lion Phil DeSilva, Leeward Oahu’s NUMBAH 1 chicken ticket seller.

Much to everyone’s surprise, or perhaps we should have anticipated it; the top chicken ticket seller this year was none other than Alice De Silva! Yes, she’s Lion Phil’s companion in service! Perhaps she should be a Lion!

Coming Soon

An attraction for many of the helpers was Lion Bobby’s famous fried rice. It was filled with several types of sausages, kamaboko, and other ingredients. Sushi, a popular accompaniment to the chicken, was also sold. Lion Irwin would have salivated.

The smell of cooking chicken drew people from the community, a reporter from MidWeek, and, believe it or not, a tourist couple who also took pictures! The couple wanted to know what made our chicken so delicious.

Coming Soon

The fundraiser was so successful that we were completely sold out by 12:30 p.m., and we still had an hour to go! Lion Kerry Nishimoto was a great salesman, speaking in various languages to the passersby and getting them to buy sushi and fried rice in addition to the chicken.

In spite of the rainy weather the fundraiser went on. The funds raised will fund all our community activities for the next year. Perhaps you’ll drop by next year and join us or buy our chicken. (Story by Virginia Padayhag – Leeward Oahu, Photos by Paul Kudo – Pearl City)

Thirty-two Lions from Hawaii Kai, Kaimuki, Koko Head, and Manoa Waioli were out in full force for the Annual Region 5 – Zone 1 and 2 Vision and Hearing Fair held at Kahala Mall on Saturday, March 14th from 10 AM to 2 PM. A vacant store front near Center Stage at Kahala Mall formerly occupied by Foot Locker was utilized for this project.

All of the screening services were provided free to the public. Fifty-eight adults and nineteen children took advantage of the vision screening, while twenty-seven adults and six children participated in the hearing screening. Optometrists Dr. Loretta Ng, Dr. Karen Wang, and Lion Dr. Wesley Hamada graciously volunteered their professional expertise and tested adult vision screening applicants on equipment provided by Dr Roger Ede of Hawaii Kai.

Coming Soon

Club members who previously participated in vision and hearing screening of preschoolers and elementary students put their skills to the test in comfortably screening anyone entering the booth. One parent upon being told that her child was having difficulty with her distance vision, promised a trip to an optometrist for further testing.

Coming Soon

Lions from Manoa Waioli Club participated by cleaning several hundred eyeglasses. Not only did they clean the glasses but also replaced nose pads and tightened or replaced screws. Several members of their club are professionals from Lens Crafters who have trained others in the proper cleaning of glasses.

On the opposite side of the Mall, an impressive display, featured posters from Sight is Beautiful Division I – IV winners from eight elementary schools (Star of the Sea, Wilson, Aina Haina, Wailupe, Holy Trinity, Kamiloiki, Koko Head, Haihaione). Lions also manned that display and answered questions from the many visitors, which included parents and children from participating schools who stopped and enjoyed the posters. This poster display ran for seven days from March 9th to the 14th. Sight Is Beautiful committee chairperson’s Lion Larry Lim of Koko Head and Lion Alvin Hayashibara of Hawaii Kai coordinated the contests in their respective school districts.

Also Shawn Wofford, Executive Director of the Hawaii Lions Eye Bank, volunteered his Saturday to set up an informational display and presentation, telling all who stopped by about the Eye Bank and about the tremendous contribution one can make through organ donation.

Hawaii Lions at the Honolulu Festival Parade

Posted March 16, 2009

I was contemplating committing to be part of this event as the previous night was dedicated to the art of refreshment consumption, courtesy of this Tennessee company…Jack Daniels. If you’re curious to see where, check it out here! Additional Photos of the Parade were taken by Alice Kudo AND Paul Kudo! AND Steven Yoshimura's Roosevelt High School Leos!

Anyway, after a good night’s sleep, I was able to drag my 300lb carcass to Fort DeRussy, with Lois (a.k.a. Karen) in tow. It was her very first day of shooting CHOKE photos from my digital SLR, and she did really well without much direction. In lieu of this, I was able to freely use the camcorder and interview a few of the Lions plus Leos. (Photo above left; Richard Ching - Kaimuki) Watch highlights of the parade in the Video Vault!

Surprisingly, we had more Leos than Lions out there…GEEZ folks…bust out your walkers!! Ha! The Roosevelt High School Leos were well represented. Led by Lion Steven Yoshimura of Chinatown, they added another merit to their long list of service credits this year. We’ve got 38 Leo Clubs here in the State…gotta have more NEXT YEAR!!

Other than shooting pictures or video, there was an internal quest to search for the elusive “Obama Girls & Boys.” These are the people that traveled from Obama City in the Fukui Prefecture Japan. Several of us got a mug with their station pole #30. The attendant holding the sign is a student at Punahou! Visit their website English or, Nihongo

The time was nearing the start of the parade…so, Lois and I headed on out to Lewers Street which was the performance area. We had a nice spot next to the announcer’s speaker system. Still in a quest to find the Obama peeps, I recall that the women were wearing yellow Muumuus…are these the ones?? (Photo at right). Nope!

Oh well…sooner than we knew it, the Hawaii Lions were parading down Kalakaua Avenue, walker free! Hey, I’m just kidding…they were all going strong. I love parades, and this one was going to last upwards to 3 hours in length. I believe we as Lions should take this opportunity to think…what if all 1800 Hawaii Lions were participating? That would certainly make a statement. Power by numbers and it will help our membership growth…Did you know that? The publicity is FREE, and the walk is 1 mile. Go figure.

Half an hour later and a dozen groups gone by, OBAMA appears!! Memorable moments can happen at any given time…sometimes it requires effort to seize that opportunity. One of the ladies were passing out “I –HEART- OBAMA” stickers. I flagged one of them down and scored my own shwag!! Domo Arigato Gozaimasu! WOOHOO! Check out the video!

15 minutes later, the parade was ½ way done…YIKES!! I looked at Lois and said…”You Hungry?” She gave me a blank stare like she was going to die of malnutrition. Ooh…no answer was needed. We packed up and headed on over to Cheeseburger Waikiki. The short hike back was worth the effort. Her eyes were bigger than her stomach and she ordered the Royal Alii Burger (Loco Moco on a bun), while I had a Bacon Cheeseburger (Photo at left). Along with some fries, she put that baby away, less one bite. Oh my.

Folks, it was a modest crowd of Lion participants…but let’s think the BIG PICTURE. In our next parade down Kalakaua, howz about 100% turnout? Seem doable? Possible? Let’s restore that “Mana!” (Story by D50 Webmaster, Photos by Karen Mizumoto, Alice & Paul Kudo - Pearl City)

Kaaawa Kinders

Posted March 16, 2009

Lion Hillary White of the Kahaluu Lions participated in the Region 3 Leadership and Hearing Screening Training in October at St Anthony School coordinated by Region 3 Chair Agnes Tani. Lion Hillary was receptive to the screening program; she knew she wanted to bring this program to her students, her kindergarten class at Kaaawa Elementary School. With the help of her fellow Kahaluu Lions and DG Shannon, 21 kindergarteners participated in the District 50 Hearing Screening Program: otoscopic check, typanogramic screening, and audio pure tone testing.

To prepare the youngster for the screening, Lion Hillary practiced with her students. She taught them to be quiet and listen to sounds such as the subtle rattling of keys. She taught them to respond to the sound by raising their hands. All of this preparation ensured the successful hearing screening by her kindergarteners on March 6.

Region Chair Agnes Tani, Lions Julia Putes, Carole Toguchi, Shirley Kaluhiwa, and John Yu from the Kahaluu Lions volunteered their skills at this project along with DG Shannon Ching and CIS Lion June from Waikiki 2000. For the Lions, it was delightful treat working with the wide-eyed and curious kinders from Miss Hillary's class. (Story & Photos by June Ching - Waikiki 2000)

Kapiolani Community College Cleanup Project

Posted March 16, 2009

The Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club participated in a community cleanup project at Kapiolani Community College (KCC) on 15 March 2009 from 8:00-11:00am. Working with students and faculty from KCC and other community groups, the project entailed cleaning the cactus garden and laying mulch in specified areas.

The group was able to remove over fifty bags of green waste and trash and lay mulch in two areas on campus, even under intense intermittent rain showers and a flash flood advisory. Following the cleanup project lunch was prepared and served by the faculty members of KCC. (Story & Photos by Steven Yoshimura - Chinatown)

Vision Van at the Native Hawaiian Health Fair

Posted March 14, 2009

Double-booking service projects paid off on Sunday, March 8, 2009. When our first project was unexpectedly cancelled, I took the opportunity to assist with the attractive “Vision Van” that was scheduled to do eye screening exams at the Native Hawaiian Health Fair at Bishop Museum.

As I arrived, the colorful van was relocating to an area by the Ewa parking lot, closer to the multitude of health screening tables already set up for the day. Manned by personnel from Ke Ola Mamo, that area was quite busy providing blood pressure readings, vision screenings, massages, and a multitude of other services for visitors to the health fair. People were then referred to the Vision Van for a higher level of eye examination.

Within 90 seconds, the camera used in the van can take a picture of the retina (the back of the eyes). From this picture, doctors at the retina institute can make a good accurate diagnosis of eye disorders such as macular degeneration, cataracts and glaucoma and diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure. The van also attracted some curious, younger visitors who just wanted to see what it was like inside. They were warmly accommodated and given a fast peek!

Personnel from the Retina Institute of Hawaii initially began the set-up for the day with two volunteers (that included yours truly). Personnel and volunteers from the American Diabetes Association soon arrived and the rest of the set up was almost completed when it was detected that the camera was not functioning. Dr. Otto quickly took off to retrieve another one and was back in no time. By then, additional members of the Lions Club of Honolulu had also arrived and quickly started to help.

There was a steady stream of people requesting an eye screening examination, but it was always a manageable number with no long lines or wait time. The people in the adjacent screening areas were great as they informed all their visitors to make their way to the Vision Van for an additional eye check up! Members of the Aloha Pono Lions Club also provided assistance for the afternoon shift.

Results of the eye screening exams will be sent to the person screened for a follow up with their own doctors if necessary. This eye screening is so quick, simple and such a great way to get additional health information for an individual. I am hoping that our Lions Club and other clubs can continue to assist and work with the Vision Van and its staff in providing this service to many more thousands of people in Hawaii. It was a fun, informative day for all of us as you also learn as you do a service project. The best double bonus for me was getting my own eye screening done and a lomi massage during the time I was there! (Story & Photos by Donna Tamasese - Honolulu)

Can You Hear This?

Posted March 14, 2009

On Wednesday, March 11, 2009, thirteen Hawaii Kai Lions and CIS, two Koko Head Lions, one Kaimuki Lion, District Governor Shannon Ching, and Lion June Ching provided hearing screening for 120 Hahaione and Kamiloiki Elementary School 2nd graders. With the previous screening of 40 Koko Head Elementary School 2nd graders on February 11, 2009, the Lions now have screened all of the Hawaii Kai Schools. View ADDITIONAL PHOTOS by Karen Tsukiyama and June Ching!

DG Shannon performed otoscopic and tympanometry exams before forwarding them on to one of six audiometer stations. Teachers of each class were also tested to enable them to have a similar student experience. Fortunately from all of the 160 students tested in Hawaii Kai, we needed to refer only three students. We look forward to their parents seeking the necessary help to improve their hearing and ongoing ability to learn.

Lion participants from Hawaii Kai included Dennis Ching, Cynthia Chun, Al Hayashibara, Bob Kane, CIS Lillian Kane, Donald Keawe, Larry Liu, Ken Nishibun, Toshi Nishioka, Mino Takaesu, PDG Merv Wee, CIS Carol Wee, and Rick Yee. Koko Head lions included Phil Sharp and Selvin Chin-Chance. Kaimuki was represented by Karen Tsukiyama.

Memorial - Lion Muriel Lum-Pang

Posted March 14, 2009

July 27, 1919 - February 2, 2009...The Honolulu Chinatown Lions bid a fond farewell to Lion Muriel Lum-Pang during a Lion’s Memorial Service held at 9:30 am on Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at St. Stephen Church on Pali Highway. Lion Muriel quietly passed away on February 2 due to respiratory failure.

Over a dozen Lions took part in the service with Past District Governor Ernest Chang as master of ceremonies. Region IV Chair James Bryan, Kamehameha Lions Club, read and presented the District Governor’s Resolution to the family, while Zone 1 Chair Kin Ching, Lions Club of Honolulu, read and presented the Lions Memorial Plaque.

PDG Ernest Chang gave a touching and fitting eulogy on the life of Lion Muriel. She remained an active member till the end, having just helped at the annual Christmas in Ensemble concert held on December 21. Her passing came as quite a shock to the club.

Her quiet smile and gentle demeanor will be missed forever at our meetings and events. (Story by Bob Lee - Chinatown)

New Member Induction at Koko Head

Posted March 11, 2009

Another milestone in the coming and goings of the Koko Head Lions was the induction of another new member. PDG Roy Aoki conducted the induction of new Lion, Selvin Chin-Chance into the ranks of the Koko Head Lions Club, at our Wednesday, March 4th general meeting. His Lions’ sponsor was none other than yours truly. Download the printable story!

Presiding over the meeting was my sponsor of ten months ago, 1st Vice President and Membership Director, Richard Kaneko. Along with his Lions’ pin, Selvin’s vest is adorned with our own pin and PDG Roy Aoki’s DG Pin. It was a very, very festive occasion.

We also had the honor of hosting three visitors from the Kamehameha Club. Lion Mel Tom brought two of his new Lions, Cheryl Silva and Karen Pack to our club to fulfill their new member visitation requirement. (Story & Photos by Phil Sharp - Koko Head)

A Celebration of the Resurrection and the Life of Lion Edward (Eddie) Shun Tim Ching

Posted March 10, 2009

Download the Printable version of this article. March 4, 2009, I had never been to a service for a fallen Lion before. This one was coordinated by Koko Head Lion Ted Aratani, a long time friend of Lion Eddie. We were called up to the front of the mortuary with the announcement “I would like to invite all Lions to please come forward to join in this Lions Memorial Service for the Late Lion Edward S. T. Ching.”

We stood in a V formation whose apex was the coffin of Lion Eddie.

- The service began with the recitation of the Lions International Pledge led by Koko Head Lions 1st Vice President, Richard Kaneko.

- Koko Head Lions President Roger Izuka expressed condolences to the family on behalf of our club.

- The Koko Head Lions Club Friendship Banner and club pin were presented to CIS Elsie Ching by Koko Head President Roger Izuka.

- Zone Chair Ken Nishibun expressed condolences on behalf of the Zone and presented a Lions plaque and a special resolution from the Hawaii District 50, and Lions Clubs International honoring - Late Lion Edward S. T. Ching to CIS Elsie Ching.

- Lion Gavin Hall lead us all in a final prayer.

Thus ended the simple but moving Lions Service for Late Lion Edward S. T. Ching.

It is unfortunate that no picture taking was allowed during the service. I would have liked to have gotten it recorded. The normal service followed. The congregation then went to participate in the internment and then on to Happy Days Restaurant for a reception.

When CIS Elsie appeared at the Happy Days Restaurant she was wearing the Koko Head Lions’ pin that had just been presented to her at her late husband’s funeral. There is no doubt that she and Lion Eddie held the Lions, especially the Koko Head Lions, close to their hearts. (Story & Photos by Phil Sharp - Koko Head)

DG Visit to EKLC an Eventful Evening

Posted March 9, 2009

When District Governor Shannon Ching visited the East Kaua‘i Lions Club’s final February meeting, 2/19/09, he was expecting to make a couple of presentations “while he was on island.” He probably was also expecting a fun-filled Lions meeting with a very active club. Expectations were certainly met—and much more!

After a delicious home-cooked by one of the club’s 4 “attendance teams,” Lion DG Shannon was welcomed with a standing ovation. He then presented Immediate Past President Vonn Ramos (photo at left) the coveted “President’s Excellence Award” from LCI for his leadership 2007-2008. This is a criteria-driven award based on club excellence, activities, and growth, and not many Presidents earn it.

Lion DG Shannon also presented Lion PDG John Uyeno with a DG bolo tie for his many years of “always being there!”. The DG then honored Lion Sandi Sterker with a special certificate for having recently sponsored new member Lion Sharon Espina (her 2nd new member of this Lions year. Lion Region Chair Kelvin Moniz stepped up to present Lion Sandi (photo at right) a congratulatory letter and share a lighter moment with presiding officer 1st VP Lion Diane Kent. Then all the “dignitaries” joined to present a special DG gift to new member Lion Sharon.

Then it was EKLC’s turn to make presentations to the District Governor. In a little fun ceremony, Lion PDG John Uyeno inducted Lion DG Shannon into EKLC’s exclusive Mokihana Menehune Alii Society, and DG Shannon pledge, among other things, to keep his eyes open while on Kauai for Menehune and report them directly to the club’s reporting officer!!. EKLC enjoyed a time of Q & A with Lion DG Shannon, after which Lion VP Diane presented him with a special club gift.

Next on a fun-filled agenda was the activation of Lion Tail Twister Harvey Kinoshita, who recognized a number of Lions for birthdays and anniversaries in exchange for a song and a dollar!! Then it was his “Happy Buck” time (a feature of EKLC where Lions put a buck into the can so that they can say anything positive that’s happening in their lives). As usual, this was a very entertaining time as close to 20 “Happy Bucks” were collected.

One of those Happy Bucks was by Lion John Ochoco, on island for about 2 weeks and getting ready to return briefly to the Philippines. Showing a picture of his and Joanne’s son Jomon (photo at left), Lion John announced that he was leaving in 3 days and would bring Jomon back to Kauai for at least 30 days—hopefully even for the convention. And, oh yes, Jomon had just celebrated his 1st birthday a couple weeks prior.

The rest of the eventful meeting included some reports on current activities and lots of talk story and good humor among the 30+ in attendance. Lions who visit Kauai could find a more enjoyable evening than attending a meeting of the EKLC. (Story & Photos by PDG Paul Steinfort)

Mililani Lions Breakfast Fundraising Event

Posted March 9, 2009

Residents of Mililani woke up to the delicious aroma of local breakfasts consisting of scrambled eggs, Portuguese sausage, rice, blueberry muffins, fresh pineapple and hot coffee. Armed with over 2000 tickets sold at $6.00 each, eager & starving customers from all over the islands converged on the Mililani High School Cafeteria to dine-in or take-out their long awaited meals.

Special guests attending included DG Shannon & CIS Lion June, VDG Alan Garson & CIS Pricilla, PID Mel Nakamura & CIS Nancy, PDGs Merv Wee, Cecelia Izuo, Dick Crislip, Bernard Ho, Roy Aoki & Ernie Chang and their CIS or families. Lions Clubs from Hawaii Kai, Pali, Waikiki 2000, Chinatown, Aiea, Pearl City, Kapolei, Lualualei, & Waianae enjoyed their breakfasts together. Mililani Lions Companions in Service had a craft table to sell their wares. Used eyeglasses were collected at the receiving table and about two dozen of their Sight is Beautiful posters were proudly displayed along the wall.

What was most impressive with the Mililani Breakfast Fundraiser is that the entire operation was run by a very small crew and still able to crank out over 2000 breakfasts in record time. The serving lines for the dine-in as well as the take-out stations were manned with only about half a dozen workers each. There appeared to be only about 8 to 10 workers in the cooking crew and only three dishwashers!

The dining room was staffed with only about half a dozen Lions, including the two at the receiving desk. There were no large groups of Leos, Boy scouts or CISs to assist with the breakfast’s fundraiser. The breakfasts were dispensed efficiently and there was no long wait times, even when the take-out station was hit with an order for 60 breakfasts! Expert coordination by Lions Mike Lau, Bud & Berta Jenkins, Winston Watarai and others created a wonderful and satisfying breakfast event for all those who were lucky to have been there.

We look forward to next year’s breakfast by the Mililani Lions! (Story & Photos by Lion Paul Kudo – Pearl City)

Region IV Zone II Social

Posted March 8, 2009

March 7, 2009…the Lions of Aiea, Halawa, Leeward Oahu, and Pearl City took a break from service, getting together for an evening of camaraderie. Kudos to Lion Wendell Hosea - Aiea for inviting me and Lois (a.k.a. Karen) to take part of this special event at the Fleet Reserve Association. He also hooked me up with a Heineken, one of several that even VDG2B Chris Tamura and Brian Akimoto had a hand in…both from Pearl City. GOOD DEAL!! Thanks guys! I recall my early years of being a Lion and these gentlemen were there feeding me booze from the very beginning…read about it here at an evening of “Mixology.” Ah…the D50 Webmaster was set with refreshments at bay and he started to make his way with camera and photobug skills. Here's another bunch of pictures from Paul Kudo!

Many people have asked me how come Lois is not a Lion yet…well, she quite isn’t ready. However, to make her feel at home with everyone else, I let her sport my “Na Maka ‘o Liona” pin. I figured it looked better on her than on me. Anyway, others still were determined to persuade her…more on that later.

Each of the host clubs contributed in some way. Here, Leeward Oahu President Art Ouye preps the club’s centerpieces as fellow club member Maria Converse got caught with a “deer in the headlights” moment. These Hibiscus and Bird of Paradise complemented the aesthetics that went with our Hawaiian food dinner…a killer spread!!

Guests were treated to Pork Lau Lau stuffed with salmon, Kalua Pork, Lomi Lomi Salmon, Chicken Long Rice, Sweet Potato, Haupia, Poi, and various desserts, including Leonard’s Malasadas. WOOHOO! Crank up that caloric count baby! I scored a take home plate too…x2 on WOOHOO!

Our entertainment was supplied by someone twisted. Get this, the room was divided up into 5 groups and each had been handed a bag comprised of material to “build a Lion.” Huh??? Earlier, I mentioned that other peeps were influencing Lois to become a Lion…and they took advantage of that opportunity. When the mixer began, I whipped out my video camera and spinning around I find that she was being dressed up. Lucky her? Frankly, I thought she would shy away and normally escape. Perhaps she got tamed a bit? Ha! See if you can find her in the photo. The honor of 1st place was bestowed upon PDG Merv Wee, he’s in that posse too. Visit the VIDEO VAULT to view the contest in action!

Toss in a few other festivities, such as Lion Wendell Hosea receiving the coveted “Region IV Zone 2 Lion of the Year” award presented by Zone 2 Chair Duane Fujiwara. Congratulations! We even had a nice raffle that include several bottles of vino, and 2 huge Easter baskets both won by Lion Roy Uemura of Pearl City, their 2009-2010 President. Lucky him!

Thanks for a GREAT evening Zone 2!

City & County of Honolulu 2009 Good Neighbor Awards

Posted March 8, 2009

The C & C of Honolulu held its annual “Good Neighbor Awards” and “Earth Month Teen Video Contest Awards” Program on March 4, 2009 at Kapolei Hale.

Lion Bill Malone, Lions Club of Honolulu, was notified that he was to receive a ‘Good Neighbor Award” for his work in getting our club to sponsor a “Drain Stenciling Project” scheduled for March 8, 2009, in the Downtown Honolulu area. Lion Bill persevered in getting the information to the Board for approval and then scheduled the training for club members and the Leo Club of Damien High School.

It was a surprise in reading the Program for the evening to see that not only Lion Bill and the Lions Club of Honolulu were to receive an award, but two other Lions Clubs as well!

Ewa Beach Lions Club was recognized for its support and work on the “Ewa Beach Weed and Seed Program”. Lions Sam Fisk and Anna Williams received the award on behalf of their club.

First VP John Gephart (photo above left with Lion Bill & Mayor Mufi Hanneman), representing the Pearl City Lions Club, received their award for their support and work on the “Pearl City Bike Path Project” which has tremendous community support in the Pearl City area.

Then came our own Lion Bill Malone who along with the Lions Club of Honolulu, was recognized for starting a much-needed “Drain Stenciling Project” in the Downtown Honolulu area. By this time in the evening, Mayor Mufi Hanneman had arrived and presented Lion Bill with his award.

It was wonderful to see these three Lions Clubs being recognized for their outstanding contributions and efforts in their communities to support the C & C of Honolulu in helping to make O’ahu a “greener” and safer place to live.

Congratulations Ewa Beach, Pearl City and Honolulu Lions Clubs on being recognized with your “Good Neighbor Award.” (Story & Photos by Donna Tamasese - Honolulu)

Waiākea Lions Club 2009 Annual Chuckwagon Breakfast

Posted March 7, 2009

On February 28th, the Waiākea Lions Club conducted another successful Chuckwagon Breakfast. The Waiākea Lions Club fed 2,624 people. This massive outstanding effort was as result of 50 Lions and CIS; 42 Waiākea High School Leos and their advisors; 41 Boy and Cub Scouts and their advisors from Troop 19. We even had DG Shannon Ching and VDG Allan Garson helping with flipping pancakes. All the funds raised during his fund raising event will all go to the community in form of grants and projects. Last year, the Waiākea Lions Club use this fund raising event to sponsor 35 service projects such as high school scholarships, sponsorship of Waiākea High School Leos, and Boy and Cub Scouts troops and numerous projects.

During the breakfast a $1,000.00 check was presented to both the Salvation Army and Hawaii Food Bank. It is a Waiākea Lion’s tradition to make a donation to deserving charities from the proceeds of the Chuckwagon breakfast. The club decided on these two charities this year because they both have the capacity to multiply our donations by a factor of 9 to feed the hungry in our community. This is expected to be a very difficult year economically in our community and we believe, as Lions, that supporting our neighbors in this way is a most deserving and appropriate way to use this money.

Any successful event could not be accomplished without an outstanding leadership. Much kudos to Assistant Chairman, Ken Rosene; Treasurer, Randy Miyamoto; Ticket Chairman, Rodney Oshiro; Publicity, Bob Kawakone; Pre-Breakfast Preparation and Non-perishable procurement Chairman, Jimmy Miyake; Perishable procurement chairman, Ken Uemura; Kitchen Chairman, George Kodani; and Dining Room Chairman, Loren Mochida. Our unsung heroes are all the Waiākea Lions members, the CISs, WHS Leos and Troop 19 Cub and Boy Scouts. If I missed anyone please forgive the oversight. This is our biggest fundraising project of the year and every Lion contributed.

Great Chuckwagon Breakfast!

Posted March 7, 2009

The annual Waiakea Lions Club Chuckwagon Breakfast is one fundraising event I always support and look forward to. February 28, 2009 started off chilly and wet upon arriving in the nearly filled parking lot at the Waiakea High School Cafeteria in Hilo at 7:00 a.m. My granddaughter and I waited for some of our Akaka Lion members to join us for the delicious breakfast of rice, pancakes, cereal, scrambled eggs, spam, papaya halves, juice, hot chocolate, and hot coffee. Also there to enjoy breakfast and recognized were DG Shannon Ching and VDG Alan Garson.

All of the monies go back into the community as PID Herb Watanabe stressed (photo above left). Representatives from The Food Basket, Inc. (formerly Hawaii Island Food Bank) and the Salvation Army were each presented with a $1,000 check from the proceeds of this event. The presentations were given for their outstanding work with the underprivileged in our community.

Thank you Waiakea Lions Club and CIS, The Waiakea High School Leos and the Troop/Pack 19 Boy/Cub Scouts for a great breakfast and lucky number prizes galore (Story & Photos by Jan Asano - Akaka Falls)

Afghanistan “Vision Mission Of Aloha”

Posted March 7, 2009

For 3 weeks in April, the Kamehameha Lions Club and the East Honolulu Rotary Club will undertake the first joint Lions/Rotary major humanitarian effort in Hawai`i history. Lion Jim Bryan and Rotarian Gary Bowersox (photo at left of Lion Gary) have volunteered for a dangerous expedition into the remote mountain villages above Kabul, Afghanistan. The two men will deliver over 5,000 used eyeglasses collected by Lions Clubs throughout Hawai`i. The glasses will be distributed to thousands of youngsters in dire need of vision care. Download the FULL PRESS RELEASE!

The tiny Kabul Rotary Club had hoped the worldwide Lions organization (known as “The Knights Of The Blind”) could assist in this desperate effort, but were unable to make it happen on the international level because of the volatile political situation. However, Hawai`i Lions and Hawai`i Rotarians united their local efforts to privately finance and execute the entire mission. “The isolated Afghan Rotarians asked for vision help and no one was willing to stick their neck out. It was one political excuse after another.” says Bryan. “So, Gary and I said, ‘What the hell - - we’ll just have to do it ourselves.’ And, once we put the plans in motion, the Aloha Spirit and generosity from our fellow Lions and Rotarians in Hawai`i has been phenomenal.”

Jim & Gary has finalized their deal with KHON-FOX2 to be the media sponsor for the Afghanistan trip. Jim will be providing regular TV reports for them while on location. If something major breaks, they'll also upload their reports directly to the FOX News Network. Both will be featured on KHON2's Morning News with Kirk Matthews starting Thursday April 2nd (6:15am). They'll also appear in a follow-up upon return.

Lieutenant Colonel David Graham (photo above right) on the US Army base in Kabul - our 13 cases of eyeglasses have landed! The military has them secured for us where we'll pick them up on our arrival before heading off to the mountain villages. (Story by Region IV Chair Jim Bryan - Kamehameha)

Lions Clubs of Maui Plate Lunch Fundraiser

Posted March 2, 2009

The Lions Clubs of Maui have for years raised zone funds through its annual golf tournament but each year it was becoming more difficult to get sponsors and golfers.  So this year we decided to try something different.  Each of the clubs in the zone has done a plate lunch fundraiser at one time or another but it was never done at the zone level. February 28, 2009 was our most recent cookout at the Wailuku Hongwanji.

If each of the five clubs in the zone could sell 200 tickets at $7.00 a ticket, we would gross $7000.  Subtract the expenses of $2000 and we would net $5000 which is what we would have made with the golf tournament.  With about 125 members in the zone, each member would have to sell only eight tickets.  Ah, the power of numbers!

What if each zone did this as a district fundraiser?  1800 members each selling eight tickets equals 14400 tickets.  At $7.00 a ticket that equals $100800.  Subtract the expenses of $28800 and you would net $72000.

What about manpower?  Well it took all the members to sell tickets but only 25 to actually make the plate lunches or 20% of the members.  A twenty member club would have to send four members to make plate lunches.  Just a thought!

This is exactly how our fundraiser worked and the fellowship between members of the various clubs made it fun.  See attached pictures of our zone making plate lunches of Kiawe grilled beef teriyaki, two scoops rice, and corn.

Annual Ed Ho Memorial Swim Meet

Posted March 2, 2009

Not long after the untimely passing Lion Ed Ho a teacher and swim coach at Waimea High School the West Kauai Lions Club started the Annual Ed Ho Memorial Swim meet at the Waimea Swimming Pool. However, after 32 plus years the Swim meet was placed on hold for about three years because the Waimea Swimming Pool was under renovation.

The pool was reopened in mid 2008 and the resumption of the Annual Ed Ho Memorial Swim meet was planned to tie in with the Waimea Town Celebration February 21, 2009. A change was made to the format as the Ed Ho Memorial Swim meet was previously open only to youth 17 years and under. This year for the first time adults were invited to participate. The youth who participated were from the Swim Kauai Aquatics swim club and the adults were either walk-ons or from the YMCA. Check out the results of the meet.

Lion Naoko Ho the spouse of the late Lion Ed Ho, and their daughter Joanne Parongao along with Lion Elaine Saiki handed out ribbons to the heat winners and trophies to those winning in their age groups.

Special thanks go to the Kauai Swim Aquatics as they really helped in making this event happen. They provided the staff, referees, and equipment. The Lions provided assistance with setting up and timing. (Story & Photos by Eric Nordmeier - West Kauai)

Haleakala Lions Club 60th Charter Celebration

Posted March 2, 2009

On February 20th the Haleakala Lions Club celebrated our 60th anniversary. At our 50th anniversary we honored four charter members Lion Tad Matsuoka, Lion K.U. Chee, Lion Ah Hong Chee, and Lion David Cup Choy. Sadly they have all passed away in the last ten years along with long time member Lion Richard Kibe and with a moment of silence we remembered and honored their years of dedicated service to our community.

This night was special though because we honored Lion Eddie Bak, who was not a charter member but joined in November 1949 and thus will soon receive his 60 year service chevron. Many past members came back to show their appreciation to Lion Eddie not just for his years of service but because he was their friend. Lion Eddie received many commendations on this night but nothing meant more to him than being honored by his peers. Among those peers was PDG Roy Nishida, a former member of the Haleakala Lions and his sponsor Lion Kazu Hamasaki.

PDG Bernard Ho was our key note speaker and eloquently addressed the gathering of over 50 Lions and spouses, motivating us to move forward and to embrace the new technology that will thrust us into the future. DG Shannon Ching capped a very busy day by flying in after spending the day on Kauai and presented Lion Eddie with District 50 accolades. To make the night even more special, PDG Bernard Ho inducted two new members into the club. Congratulations to Lions Kam Oi Teri Ramelb and Lion Robert Ramelb.

Special thanks to Lion Carol Guerrero, who chaired this event and made sure that all club members received gifts in recognition of their years of service. Aloha to the Maui Lions Club, Kahului Lions Club, Kahului Maui Airport Lions Club, and the West Maui Lions Club for their unwavering support throughout the years. Ala Moana Lions Club Honors Past District Governors

Posted February 28, 2009

The Ala Moana Lions Club has made it a tradition to invite District 50’s Past District Governors to an annual dinner meeting in February. This year’s event was held on February 4, 2009. We met in the private dining room at Zippy’s Restaurant in Makiki.

Eight past governors had the pleasure of witnessing an induction of a transferred member, Tracey Saiki. Past District Governor Ernest performed the induction ceremony. PDG Cecelia was given the privilege to present Past President Ron Ushijima with the coveted 100% president’s pin while PDG Mervin presented Ron with a membership key pin from Lions Clubs International.

The Ala Moana Lions must know that PDGs like to talk because President Miles Masumura gave each PDG the opportunity to say a few words while being presented with a gift. All of the PDGs expressed their gratitude to the Ala Moana Lions for their generosity and kindness. PDG Ernest Chang as well as PDG Dick Crislip shared jokes, and PDG Cecelia encouraged the members to strive to become a District Governor. She mentioned that it took a lot of work, however, the job was very rewarding. Art Kohara made sure that the evening ended with everyone winning a door prize. (Story & Photos by PDG Cecelia Izuo - Pali)

Here is a little challenge. See if you can match the District Governors picture with their name. (Shown left-right, top-down)

PDG Cecelia Izuo (2004 – 2005) If you can’t match me to my picture, you’re in sad shape. PDG Roy Aoki (2000 – 2001)
PDG Mervin Wee (2006 – 2007) PDG Richard Crislip (2002 – 2003)
PDG Ernest Yamane (1992 - 1993) PDG Tokuo Tani (1978 - 1979)
PDG Donald Funayama (1995 – 1996) PDG Ernest Chang (1990 – 1991)

Akaka Falls Lions Litter Pick Up

Posted February 26, 2009

On Saturday, February 21, 2009, nine Akaka Falls Lions completed our first Litter Pick Up Project of the new year along the approximate five mile stretch of roadway through the quiet town of Honomu up to the Akaka Falls State Park.

The morning started out looking a little cloudy as we gathered at the Honomu Church and sure enough as soon as we started to head out the rains came. Did that stop us??...Of course not!! It may have dampened our clothes but not our spirits! We were determined to accomplish our mission of keeping the route to one of the most scenic State Parks clear of unsightly trash. Some of us were a little more prepared than others with boots, raincoats and hats. Later, while still damp and cold, we made some time for a little bit of refreshments and fellowship.

Big Mahalo to Lion Stan Sanehira for providing his pickup truck and taking care to dump the trash bags. Members participating were Lions Nathan Chang, Coleen Kasamoto, Julie Ota, Stan Sanehira, Glen "Shige" Shigehara, Len Shimabukuro, Dennis Tong, Richard Unoki, and President Kent Inouye. 26TH Annual Donation Check from the May Mitchell Royal Foundation!

Posted February 26, 2009

Kona Hawaii. Shown above is Shawn Wofford, Executive Director of the Hawaii Lions Eye Bank and Makana Foundation (HLEBMF) thanking PDG Lion Norman Sakata who represented the May Mitchell Royal Foundation, for presenting a $15,000 check held on by Lion Carlo Priska, Chairman of the HLEBMF. It was the 26th annual donation check received from the May Mitchell Royal Foundation, earmarked for the operation of the HLEBMF, for a total of $269,000. Lion Norman established acquaintance with Ruth Lishman, daughter of May Mitchell Royal back in 1982, that started their generous $10,000 yearly donations, which was increased a few years ago.

Aside of the everyday operational cost, part of the May Mitchell Royal Foundation’s donation enabled the Lions Eye Bank and Makana Foundation to purchase all three of the Argon Laser Microscope used in the laboratory to ensure the distribution of top quality corneas.

...Sharing the Lions Story Resulted in Fifty-Nine Monthly Donations!

Kona Hawaii. Lion Ben Tanaka, President of the Hawaii Lions Foundation is all smiles as he received the fifty ninth consecutive monthly $400 donation check from PDG Lion Norman Sakata HLF Trustee of Region VIII, Zone 1,who represented the donor, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Tansey of Kona. Lion Norman stated that it all started in March 2004, when he first met the Tanseys and shared some heart warming stories of the humanitarian deeds the Hawaii Lions Foundation was doing for the needy, especially to those with sight and hearing impairment.

After receiving their first $400 check, Sakata personally visited the Tanseys with an orchid plant. It was then, Mrs. Tansey whispered to him and said, “I think my husband wants to make this a monthly donation.” That was fifty nine months ago and unfailingly, we have received $400 every month since, for a total of $23,600.00 so far.

In recognition for their generosity, the Hawaii Lions Foundation for the past five years, placed a full page (inside back cover) ad in our District 50 Directory about the Tanseys and the HLF Appreciation plaque for anyone donating $1000 plus to HLF. (Story by PDG Norman Sakata, HLF Trustee)

RHS Leo Club American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life

Posted February 25, 2009

The Roosevelt High School Leo Club participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life held from 7:00pm, 20 February 2009 to 7:00am, 21 February 2009 at the Roosevelt High School track and field. Leo members participated in the luminary ceremony, the continuous walk around the track and building a boxcar to represent the club. Members collected over $1200.00 in donations and made a club donation of $200.00 for donations totaling over $1400.00 to the American Cancer Society. The Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club provided and setup two large tents, provided dinner, a continental breakfast, snacks and refreshments for the Leos, provided the chaperones and helped the Leos tear down the tents and cleanup following the completion of the event.

The Roosevelt High School Leo Club had the largest group, with 71 members participating, at the event that the Relay for Life Committee had the Leos form smaller teams or augment other teams to participate in the different activities and events. One activity was to design and use a card board box car that members carried around the track, another was to take purple and white material and create a costume for modeling and judging. Following the activities, the committee showed a movie and for the rest of the evening everyone was left to their own devices.

This is the fourth year that the Roosevelt High School Leo Club has participated in this event and the most successful to date in participation and raising funds for the American Cancer Society. (Story & Photos by Steven Yoshimura - Chinatown)

VDG2B, Takes a Lickin' But Keeps On Tickin'!

Posted February 25, 2009

During renovations at the home Saturday, of District 50 Treasurer Chris Tamura, he had a 'speedy' head-on collision with a 2x4 carried by a co-worker, knocking him flat on his back, resulting in a HUGE, bloody tungkobu on his forehead. Despite his injuries, he with the help of his CIS and other Lions, picked up nearly $10,000 of relief supplies for distribution at Waianae and other sites

He was there at Waianae Mall to help load up the goods into cars of the registered flood victims. CIS Gina jokingly demonstrated how his injuries could have happened, but we know Lion Chris and he is not afraid of 2 by 4's or even nasty wood splinters in his big toe!

Today, Lion Chris was right there doing Amblyopia Screening at the Salvation Army Pre-school in Waimalu. Lion Chris Tamura, A.K.A. "SPEEDY", is a truly dedicated lion, committed to serve the communities and the District 50 Organization as our future Vice District Governor. (Story & Photos by Paul Kudo - Pearl City)

The Great Aloha Run...Lions “Stepping up to the Plate”

Posted February 23, 2009

This year's Great Aloha Run February 16, 2009 seemed like any other. Our kind PID Mel Nakamura slept overnight so he could prepare breakfast for all the Lion and Leo volunteers, including other volunteers who came to help. Serving the food were the ladies from Waianae.

Chairperson Rob Piimauna gave us all our instructions on what to do. PID Mel led us in a moment of silence as we remembered Joe Piimauna and all the work he had done for the Great Aloha Run.

Onwards as we were all off to work folding T-shirts. Lion CareyAnne Ichimura (photo at right, extreme right) remembers when she was about 12 years old. Joining her sisters and parents (Lion Clarence & PDG Cecelia) at the Great Aloha Run, they were the ones who started the tradition of folding the T-shirts. (Mom believes they were bored waiting and needed something to do.) Anyway, the shirts were all folded and placed on the tables and all the extras were put back in their boxes.

Ah...then it was time to chat while waiting for the runners to start arriving. As the finishers made their way to pick up their shirts, several young women volunteers were collecting the raffle tickets for the free door prizes. Since the participants were not prepared for this task, the pathway got clogged. What to do? Lion Mel Aoki stepped right in and started helping the girls collect the tickets. Soon enough, a bunch of Lions assisted and the lines started moving again. It turned out that more of us were collecting raffle tickets from runners than were distributing T-shirts. In the end, things began to run smoothly and the shirts were dispersed in an orderly manner.

Special thanks for Lions such as Lion Mel who saw a need, was quick thinking and offered his assistance to help to resolve the problem. I think that is Lionism at its best! (Story & Photos by PDG Cecelia Izuo - Pali)

D50 Disaster Relief Distribution Waianae

Posted February 23, 2009

The District 50 distribution of disaster relief supplies February 22, 2009 went out to victims of the recent floods in the Waianae Area. Lions Clubs volunteering to help were from Waianae, Lualualei, Kapolei, Ewa Beach, Pearl City and Waikiki 2000. Additional photos by June Ching - Waikiki 2000.

Relief supplies were funded by Lions Club International and packaged for 17 needy families signed up. Each package consisted of a bag of rice, cases of vienna sausage, spam, pork & beans, sweet peas, chicken of the sea tuna, chicken breasts, ramen noodles, large boxes of cereal, granola nut bars and a gift card to Ross'. Coordinating the event at the Waianae Mall distribution tent were Region II Chair Donald Yamato, Lualualei President Kaye Stang, Lion June Ching & District Governor Shannon Ching.

While waiting for the distribution time from 2pm to 4pm, the Lions got to enjoy a broke-da-mouth delicious 7 course lunch at the Waianae Chop Suey. This is the meeting place of the Lualualei Lions Club. Videoing the disaster relief activity for Olelo broadcast was Waianae Lions IPP David Oclinarie.

It was a beautiful day and the flood victims were very grateful for the donations as many shed a tear and received hugs from the Lions as they departed. It sure felt good to be a Lion!

Akaka Falls Lions Club CIS Appreciation Dinner

Posted February 22, 2009

"THANK YOU" and "MAHALO" to our Companions In Service (CIS). Akaka Falls Lions Club CIS Appreciation Dinner was held on February 21, 2009 at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, Mala Ikena Room. Twenty CIS and other guests were in attendance along with 24 members and everyone enjoyed the gala event. Our club has been active for many years in carrying out and participating in various service projects and fund raising activities. Funfests, as well as other Lions clubs’ funfests, are part of our yearly activities. Our CIS have taken part in all they were asked to do and did all tasks with enthusiasm and purpose. Most of all, our members appreciate the CIS individually and collectively for supporting our endeavors to be part of Akaka Falls Lions Club’s quest to serve others.

As part of our program for the evening, MC Lion Tracy Arruga did a wonderful job of making sure that everyone enjoyed the food, the music, and games and prizes. President Lion Kent Inouye opened his welcome thanking all the CIS. Lion Ben Cockett did a terrific job creating our beautiful centerpieces. Lion President Kent and CIS Cynthia provided delcious treats for everyone and CIS Linda Koreyasu surprised everyone with her beautifully wrapped homemade valentine brownies. We were also privileged to hear VDG Alan Garson with updates for the upcoming convention, other happenings in District 50 and how we all appreciate our CIS. Lions Richard Alidon and Nathan Morita entertained the group with soothing dinner music. Everyone had a wonderful evening. MAHALO CIS! Pearl City at the GAR 1st Water Station - the Supporting Cast

Posted February 22, 2009

The Great Aloha Run is a festive and colorful event that attracts thousands of runners. Putting on this extravaganza requires a massive, well-coordinated logistical effort involving a supporting cast of thousands of volunteers. The Pearl City Lions were proud to be a part of the support staff for this worthy endeavor.

RRRRIIINNNGGG!!! What's that darn alarm going off at 3:00 am for??? It's President's Day, and we should be sleeping in! Nah, it's the wee hours of the Great Aloha Run, and the Pearl City Lions Club is ready to undertake another big project. At 3:45 am, the early work crew and drivers gather at Lion Dick Fujiwara's home. At 4:00 am two 14-feet U-haul trucks are on the road, loaded with supplies and tee shirts, headed for water/aid station #1 at Puuloa Road and Nimitz Highway. A myriad of pre-race details are swiftly accomplished. We set up 8 stations with cups, trays, pitchers, buckets and barrels. We connect hoses, distribute cleaning supplies. Water buffaloes arrive, bags of ice cubes are delivered. We fire up a generator and flood lights, set up a refreshment table. CIS Arlene Hajime slices up ono pastries, which are devoured by hungry volunteers. Lion Warren Hiromoto, CIS Arlene, CIS Marilyn Tagawa, and Lion Chris Tamura (pictured) also enjoy the treats. Students from 6 high schools, members of a church and the Pearl City Hawaiian Civic Club set up their stations with hundreds of water cups in paper trays. Lions are assigned to stations. This certainly is a well-orchestrated event, thanks to the efforts of our hard-charging committee, consisting of Lions Warren, John Gephart, Roy Uemura, Ron Hajime and Dick Fujiwara.

The race starts, and we see a wheel chair whizzing by just after 7:00 am. Soon the leaders of the pack zoom by amid loud cheers from the hundreds of volunteers. An endless throng of thousands of runners pass, and are encouraged with claps, shaka signs, high fives. We get chicken skin seeing military units running in unison, their proud colors waving in the winds. We see familiar faces. Friends, relatives, babies in strollers, visitors from Japan, all enjoying a day at the race. Kalakaua Lion Jason Yama passes by, and then who do we see … Captain America! No, it's Superman (aka Webmaster Irwin) and his lovely lady Lois (pictured at left with small kine wardrobe malfunction)! They receive heroes' welcomes. The runners all appreciate our encouragement, and welcome the cups of cold water. The highway is littered with plastic cups. No problem, we can sweep it up in a jiffy.

After the last runners cross the water point, we scoop up all the cups, break down the stations and pack everything in the trucks and vans. Everyone moves swiftly, no one needs to be told what to do. They just do it. The Pearl City Lions have shown great teamwork to support one of Hawaii's greatest charities, which benefits 27 organizations. It was a privilege and pleasure to support GAR 2009. See pictures of the Pearl City Lions in action in Lion Irwin's photo gallery on D50's fabulous web site.

Race Day at the Great Aloha Run

5:00am...“Lois” (a.k.a. Karen) and I are on our way down to Aloha Stadium to catch the bus that will take us to Aloha Tower’s staging area…where the START line is located. It’s President’s Day February 16, 2009, the 25th Annual Hawaii Telcom Great Aloha Run. My mission was to shoot CHOKE pics (over 1000 shutter clicks, with 700 or so images available on the website), to include whatever Hawaii Lions were in the pack. First up, fellow Kamehameha Lion Vernon Nakamura (photo at left; at right of picture wearing blue with arms up). At this time, the participants were moving as the starting gun just went off.

Now, I had 3 cameras on me, my Canon Digital Rebel XTI SLR, a Canon 750 Powershot (for backup), and the Canon Vixia HD that I use for the Webcam. Doing double duty with two cameras in hand(s) was a challenge, and I managed to capture video footage of the run and Lions at work. Check out the Video Vault’s “Great Aloha Run.”

As we walked Ewa on the Mauka side of Nimitz, I spocked out Watanabe Floral’s entrance. They were handing out FREE long stem roses. Well, let’s say, Lois was a happy camper. This establishment is conveniently located for those that need to use the restroom and fear the blue lavatories. They even mention that on the sign above the store entrance. What a way to bring potential customers into your store!

Crossing Lagoon drive & Puuloa, we made it to the 1st Water Station where the Pearl City Lions greeted the most thirsty. Fortunately, I packed several water bottles, but I did help myself to a few extra cups of H2O. Lion Paul Kudo was busy with his video camera doing his photo bug thing. There were two other stations ahead, but when it comes to significance, you’ll always remember the first.

At 3 hours in (not my record time of last year’s 2 hours and 11 minutes), the light was at the end of the tunnel, comes with an emblazoned sign that says “FINISH.” Lucky me, feet hurt, girlfriend complaining, what a relief to be at the end. Ha! Anyway, Lois was shocked when I said that there was another mile of walking...if her eyes could shoot lasers, I’d still be standing, cuz, well you know…I got this OTHER gig going on, the one that allows me to wear a red cape…SUPERMAN808.COM

From past experience, if you arrive late, and your T-shirt size is XXL, you may not get your FINISHER’s T-shirt as the stock may run out at pickup. I don't think it is the norm for the shirts to deplete, just caught me one year and that stood out in my head. However, with careful planning, I asked Kamehameha Prexy Lion Teresa Bryan to hold a shirt for me. Voila!! I got one. She and a bunch of other Lions, plus an army of Leos manned the T-shirt area handing out to those that completed the 8.15 mile trek.

After a good 20 minute break, Lois and I headed on into the Stadium's Mauka dugout box. Carole Kai-Onouye and hubby Eddie welcomed us, pointing directly to the breakfast buffet table…”GO EAT!” Wow, and here I am contemplating snacking on my little donuts at the refreshment area. A full breakfast was on my mind even before we got there. Lois concurred, and we helped ourselves to some omelet, seasoned potatoes, bacon, chicken wings, fresh fruit, coffee, brownie, and even Croissant sandwiches from Burger King. It was like finding an oasis in the desert. Thanks again Carole!

I bit into my eggs, then I heard some activity going on outside on the field. It was Lion Rene Mansho Emceeing a group race, formed from different state high schools. Winners got a chance at trips to the mainland. Lucky them! Not enough room to put my breakfast plate picture here, but CLICK ON THIS LINK to see MY plate!

Back at the dugout…security walked in and took a shot at the breakfast table. Lois and I chilled for a another few minutes before we headed on back to the car…which seemed to take forever, even though it was only a 15 minute walk. At least, not for me…so I was told…Not too many people from the general public get to sit in the dugout, unless you're a player or sports staffer. I was pooped out and rest was next on my priority list. Couldn't explore further. Auwe!

This year’s Silver Anniversary was GREAT! It spawned the most exercise I’ve had all year…of 2009! I've collected a few snacks along with my t-shirt. Having 3 different varieties of donuts, plus a bunch of bananas were my goodies for the late night munchies.

I finished 14758 coming in at 2:58:54...Phew, just under 3 hours. Looking forward to next year's event.

3rd Annual Pearl City Lions Valentines Day Breakfast Fundraiser

Posted February 17, 2009

The 3rd Annual Pearl City Lions Valentine’s Day Breakfast Fundraiser February 14, 2009 was a resounding success, enjoyed by all the guests & supporters, which included Lions & companions from all over the island, friends, relatives and especially members of the community at large.

With approximately 2000 tickets sold, all the delicious breakfast plates were served in the dining hall or the drive-thru pickup serving lines. Over 100 volunteers (53 Lions(including volunteers from Halawa & Leeward clubs), 12 Companions in Service, 31 Pearl City High School Leos, 2 Leo Advisors, 3 PCCA Officers, 5 friends and 3 student helpers), all areas were covered. Committee chairs for Cooking, Parking, Drive-thru/takeout, ticket distribution/receiving, eyeglass recycling, membership/information table, serving lines, dining hall service, entertainment & music, publicity, photography & video display and dishwashing with their committee members followed through with their duties to make the morning event flow smoothly.

Support from our Companions in Service added that "touch of class" in the dining hall and the energetic Leos took on the delivery runners duties from the kitchen to the takeout/drive-thru station. Our PCCA members supported our take-out/drive-thru crew and our student helpers, Ashley & Kyle, ran the Valentines Wheel to give everyone a chance to win a prize (stuffed Valentines animal, heart shaped box of chocolates or special Valentines candy).

We were blessed with beautiful Hawaiian weather on Saturday morning to add to the fun and exciting occasion. The result was the highest count of dine-in customers ever. Thanks to PID Mel Nakamura & CIS Nancy for always coming to support us. District 50 Lions also dining with us were RC Jim Bryan & Pres. Teresa Bryan, PDG Cecelia Izuo & Lion Clarence Izuo, PDG Dick Crislip & CIS Marian, Lion Bob Lee, Lion Wendell Hosea, Lions Wilbert & Helen Ho, Lion Kent Kudo, Lions Keith Sato & Earl Mostales. We can't list them all here so we would like to thank all the Lions who could come to support us. (We know PDG Merv Wee would have been with us if not for his chemo procedure last week). DG Shannon & Lion June came through the drive-thru station to takeout their breakfasts.

For those of you who could not join us in the dining hall, you really missed out on the wonderful LIVE entertainment with a cavalcade of musicians & singers including the Pearl City student jazz band. Our dining hall associates ensured every patron was taken care of (a special service cart was roaming the hall to provide anyone who desired extra rice, eggs, sausages, coffee or juice). The Valentines Wheel added excitement for the 60+ winners who hit the jackpot and got a stuffed bear/dog or box of chocolates (lucky boyfriends/husbands had something to give to their loved ones for Valentine’s Day!) If you couldn't win on the wheel, you could buy a beautiful orchid plant available in the hall, which BTW sold out completely.

In addition to getting a great meal, guests enjoyed fellowship with and meeting old as well as new friends from the community. They saw how the Lions Club and volunteerism could benefit them, especially when they learned that all profits go back to the community by way of scholarships at the high School, School Supplies, donations to charities and the needy, and to fund material costs for service projects throughout the year.

The highlight of the morning was the surprise marriage proposal on the floor of the dining hall as Darren Sagaysay got down on one knee, took out the ring box, said a few words that made Verma Fe Gabbac teary eyed and popped the question. When she said "Yes!” everyone in the hall (who by now had gotten their attention) CHEERED & APPLAUDED LOUDLY! As everyone came by to congratulate the happy couple, she said this was better than going to a fancy restaurant to get engaged. They will surely never forget this joyous day with the Lions Valentines Breakfast and the excitement it brought. Of course, they were given the grand prizes from the wheel and the orchid vendor gave them a beautiful orchid plant. Perhaps a lifetime pass to our Valentines Breakfast could be offered to celebrate their engagement anniversaries!

We owe a debt of gratitude to Pearl City Elementary School Principal Dr. Hirokane and school staff for graciously allowing us to use the cafeteria and kitchen with the help of cafeteria Mgr. Elaine, head cook Ricardo, the custodians and their PCNC. We will miss them and the location and hope that we have created an "outstanding' reputation with our breakfast that the customers will follow us to our next location. With our club's strong showing of dedication to our community, we are confident that they will be there to support our next venture. MAHALO, EVERYONE! Leeward Oahu Lions Club Celebrates 70 Years

Posted February 16, 2009

On Saturday, February 14, 2009, Leeward Oahu LC celebrated it 70th Charter Anniversary in grand style.  With about 100 members and guests in attendance, everyone enjoyed a delightful evening of good food, fine entertainment and lots of fun!  Approximately 30 members of the Tokyo Shibuya LC flew in to join their sister club in celebrating this momentous occasion.  A special place was held at the head table by a folded palaka shirt and lighted candle that marked a “seat of honor” for the late PDG Tom Tanji, a member of the club who left an indelible memory of a great Lion on everyone he made contact with.

A delicious prime rib buffet featured a variety of ono salads and vegetables, fruits, noodles, rice, chicken and Seafood Newberg, enough to fill everyone’s voracious appetites.  The dessert table boasted creamy custard pies, luscious chocolate cakes and other yummy treats.  Guests also enjoyed the 70th celebration cakes that were later passed out to all in attendance.

Lion Rene Paulo entertained the group with wonderful piano selections while other members of his family entertained with songs and dances.  PDG Lion Ryo Nakano led his group in the Japan Anthem and also pleased the audience later in a duet with his voice teacher, Mrs. S. Ishii.  He also sang other songs in Japanese and led his group again with the closing song, “Till We Meet Again – Ma ta Au Hi Ma De.”

Lion Bobby Balais skillfully coordinated the full program for the evening that also included an Induction Ceremony of three new members into the club.  Installing Officer PDG Ernie Chang was presented with a beautiful purple palaka shirt (aka Leeward Oahu LC shirt) as a token of appreciation.  The program recognized the active Monarch Lions in the Club with 20+ years of service each.  The Lions Club of Honolulu was acknowledged as the sponsor club of Leeward Oahu LC and all clubs it in turn sponsored were called upon.  Many clubs presented gifts to the Leeward Club.

Keynote Speaker, “Region Chair James” (as listed in the Program) entertained us with his witty yet profound words.  He spoke proudly of the Legacy of Lions in Hawaii and the greatness of the Leeward Oahu Lions.  RC Jim commented that this was the first time he ever heard an emcee warn the male guests to step back from the urinal before they flushed it!  Lots of laughs followed and he thanked Lion Bobby for the warning.  Of course this left the female guests wondering what they might be missing!

Congratulatory remarks by DG Shannon Ching and by Tokyo Shibuya Lions, PDG Lion Ryo Nakano and President Lion Akinori Yokogawa were delivered.  Lion Tatsuya Taga of the Lions Club of Honolulu (and Associate Member of Tokyo Shibuya LC) did an outstanding job of translating the Japanese into English for the audience.

Topping off the evening, all female guests were presented with a long-stem red rose in honor of Valentine’s Day.   This was a lovely gesture that all the ladies in the audience appreciated.  Guests also took home a cute red or white lion adorned with a flaming red mane, some chocolate goodies and a pendant with a Japanese character for a positive word (i.e. health, happiness, wealth).  At each table, the guest with a birthday closest to Valentine’s Day received a gorgeous tulip bouquet.

All in all, a wonderful evening befitting a Lions Club that has established itself for 70 years and left its legacy on the leeward coast.  Congratulations on this great occasion and we wish you many more significant years ahead for the Leeward Oahu Lions Club! The Great Aloha Run Sports, Health & Fitness Expo

Posted February 15, 2009

As a “runner”…uh…walker….Lois (a.k.a. Karen) and I made our way to the Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall February 15, 2009 to pickup our registration kit which included our racer’s bib…the thing with the big number, and to check out the various booths. Our entries were courtesy of Carole Kai, who sponsors me with 10 entries every year, as I promote the GAR on my SUPERMAN808.COM website. Good Deal…I even have a VIP pass to the press box which includes breakfast with the high and mighty...that’s if team Superman808 can make it in time by 9:45am. Thanks Carole!

Ah…this year, I’m bringing my partner in crime…have to wish her luck as this is her first year to participate. I was planning to challenge my last year’s time of 2:11…but that won’t happen. We’re going to take the slow boat and take in the view. I’ll have 2 cameras in hand and will catch Lions on the way in. Most of them will be waiting at the very end passing out Finisher T-shirts…I have my XXL waiting for me.

Anyway, this year at the Expo, I found a few horses, goats, dogs, and Lions! The Kailua High School Leo Club manned the Willows Restaurant booth. The Leos are sponsored by the Pali Lions Club. Another Lion present was Rene Mansho who multitasked promoting her company Schnitzer Steel Industries and various recycling events, such as the Aloha Aina Earth Day. Lois and I scored a mug and several coasters for answering Lion Rene’s recycle trivia contest questions. GEEHOO!!

I’m tapping out for now to get some rest to wake up at 4:00am for the Great Aloha Run. Wish us luck! (Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster Irwin Santos – Kamehameha)

The Damien High School Leos in Service

Posted February 15, 2009

The Damien High School Leos are currently in their second year as an organized group on campus. Under the guidance of Advisor Jean Ota and the school President/CEO PDG Bernard Ho, the Leos have doubled their size this year and continue to make their mark on projects in the community. The Lions Club of Honolulu sponsors this Leos Club.

During a recent School Spirit week on campus, each student donated toiletries in order to participate in the festivities. The Leo Club was in charge of organizing the students' goods that were subsequently donated to Catholic Charities. The Leos collected well over one thousand toiletries, which included toilet paper, shampoo, detergent, tooth paste, and toothbrushes. These were organized for transport to the agency. The Leos can be seen with some of the items and bags that were ready to go!

The school also received a letter of appreciation from Judith Bowman, Curator of the U. S. Army Museum of Hawaii after the Leos completed a project there that “enhanced the appearance” of the museum. She complimented the group for conducting “themselves in a professional manner and doing an outstanding job” as they painted the front of the museum that “badly needed a fresh coat of paint.” Each participating Leo received a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii.

For the 2nd straight year, the Damien Leos showed up in a large group (20 members) to assist with the cleanup at the ARC Facility on Diamond Head Road. The many additional hands provided by this Leo group again helped to make short work of a big task. The Leos got straight to work cleaning windows, screens, walking areas, benches and the yard to help tidy up the facility for the clients who live there.

The group is also gearing up for another big project. Almost 40 of these Leos have already been trained and will be scheduled to work with members of their sponsoring Lions Club of Honolulu. Together they will paint warnings on storm drains alerting people to not dump waste into the drains. With their eager spirits and excellent work ethics, these Leos and Lions hope to soon make short work of the hundreds of storm drains in the Downtown and nearby areas that need their attention. Manoa Paniolos PeeWee Get Lions Help

Posted February 10, 2009

The Manoa Waioli Lion Club's latest project was held on the weekend of January 24 - 25, at Manoa Park. About 12 Lions participated in the installing of a CM masonry wall with a steel door and frame to enlarge the "Fort Jones" storage area for the Manoa Paniolos Peewee football team.

It was hard work but a lot of fun and camaradership. I have attached a few pictures that shows our progression from start to finish. I'm pictured with Lion Lloyd Jones (at left), who in the 70's, was instrumental in donating the equipment and materials to build the initial "Fort" storage facility; hence, the name "Fort Jones". "Friday the 13th" on the Ninth with Brave Lions

Posted February 10, 2009

Love story this movie is not...far from it. The ADVANCE screening of "Friday the 13th" February 9, 2009 rounded up Lions in tow, Maria Converse (photo at left) - Leeward, and fellow Kamehameha Lion Karen Pack. This is a date movie...in a wierd way, if you don't mind having your girlfriend grab onto your arm tight, or burying her face under your armpit while the scariest scenes occur. Worked for me!

Anyway, 102.7 "Da Bomb" was the radio host and they were handing out movie related prizes via trivia contest to a "modest" crowd. Maria scored a "Camp Crystal Lake" T-shirt (the plot of the movie revolves around CCL). In addition, I acquired a FTT Sweatjack with hood (screened on hockey mask) for Lois.

Well, shrieks abound in the flick...seems like Jason Voorhies will never go away...plus it was FREE. (Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster - Irwin Santos)

He took pictures of the events that I was not at...like eating the stuff that was grilled later that Saturday evening February 7, 2009. The Lions got to snack on steak and sausage...hmmmmm...bummer. Anyway, more pictures for ya' including the inside of the Cabins, fireplace to boot! Akaka Falls Lions Eyeglass Cleaning Service Project

Posted February 10, 2009

Akaka Falls Lions held it’s first eyeglass cleaning project of the year on Wednesday, February 4, 2009. Lion Glen "Shige" Shigehara graciously allowed us to conduct the project in his garage. 10 members & 1 CIS participated in the project. A total of 396 eyeglasses were washed, scrubbed, cleaned and packed in about an hour and a half. We also will be dropping off over 50 eyeglass cases to the Salvation Army store.

It is a wonder sometimes how so much can be accomplished while both hands and mouths are going at the same time. The lively conversations though and joking around sure do make the time go by faster and the project more enjoyable. Later, our hands stopped working but our mouths kept busy as we dug into some pizzas, pupus and refreshments. Again, fun times were had as we partaked in fellowship after another successful and meaningful service project.

A big Mahalo to all those who collected and contributed their used eyeglasses. These glasses are being shipped to underdeveloped countries where it will be making a positive difference in someone’s life.

Lions participating were President Kent Inouye, Glen "Shige" Shigehara, Jan Asano, Len Shimabukuro, Patricia Dunn, Allen Yamachika, Lynnette Kaneshiro, Julie Ota, Don Coloma (crutches and all), Minoru "Winchel" Shimabukuro & CIS Mabel Shimabukuro. (Story by Len Shimabukuro, Photos by Jan Asano)

Hanami: A Winter Forum Experience

Posted February 9, 2009

For twelve Lions and CIS, the Winter Forum included a cultural expedition to Waimea’s 16th Annual Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival. Saturday, February 7th, was a perfect day for an excursion – blue sky, sunshine, and warm weather. The view of Mauna Kea was pristine. With Lion Takeo Izawa at the helm of the van, the group was off to a fun-filled day of camaraderie and educational growth. Take a look at the pictures!

Honokaa was the first stop enroute to Waimea: in addition to the necessary pit-stop business, the group indulged in the famous Tex's Malasada. Renowned for its square shape, and its non-greasy feel, the treat laden with sugar was enjoyed by everyone. Mahalo to Lions Jan and Tom Offner for sharing their dozen with us. (When you see Region 3 chair Agnes Tani you might ask her about her adventure with the strawberry-filled malasada from Tex's.)

We arrived at Waimea’s Church Row Park to view the semi-open blossoms on the 75-some cherry trees. We learned about the significant role the Waimea Lions Club played in the development of this community park: the Lions planted (picks and shovels in tow) twenty cherry trees in 1972. The Lions faced many obstacles: thieves, drought, weeds, mowers, etc. Despite the challenges, the Waimea Lions pursued their beautification project replanting damaged trees, encasing the trees with wire fencing, fertilizing, and pruning the trees. In the ensuing years, the 20 cherry trees flourished to more than 75. Today, Hanami – the viewing of cherry blossoms – has become a signature cultural festival in Waimea; it embraces multi-cultural activities of the community. Every type of food can be found. The bottles of preserves are as diverse as the types of orchids for sale. There are numerous demonstrations and performances, too.

For this group of Winter Forum attendees, the Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival was an experience to behold. Lion Takeo accommodated the needs to us, providing us with interesting and historical information about Waimea and their Lions. He also had insight to which vendors had gourmet fudge! We applaud the Winter Forum committee for providing us with this tour session. (Story & Photos by June Ching - Waikiki 2000)

Winter Forum & 3rd Cabinet Meeting

Posted February 9, 2009

175 Lions and CIS gathered at the Kilauea Military Camp on February 7-8 for the annual Winter Forum and 3rd Cabinet Meeting. The forum was held on Friday night featuring Mayor William Kenoi of the Big Island. Lions intently listened to him as he spoke in a down to earth manner. Other speakers were presidents from the Big Island clubs and past International Directors in their “Passion for Lionism”. After the forum the Lions gathered at the hospitality room sponsored by DG Shannon and VDG Alan. View photo Gallery #1, and Gallery #2.

On Saturday, the 3rd Cabinet Meeting was held in the morning. After the meeting the attendees broke up into groups to discuss different concerns of the district. After lunch a free-for-all round table was led by VDG Alan Garson. That evening a non-conventional Bingo, conducted by Akaka Falls Lions Club, was enjoyed by all. Auctioneer PID Herbert Watanabe as usual made lots of money for the region from items donated by the Big Island clubs. The evening concluded with a hospitality room sponsored by VDGC Chris Tamura and VDGC Eric Nordmier.

Congratulations to RC Gail Dochin who coordinated this event with almost 10% of the Lions in the District in attendance. The weather cooperated and was perfect. Participants were able to use the fireplace in each cabin to keep warm. (Story and Photos by George and Shirley Ito)

NFL Pro-Bowl Festival

Posted February 9, 2009

The Roosevelt High School Leo Club provided manpower to Special Olympics Hawaii to assist with different activities during the NFL Pro-Bowl Festival at Kapiolani Park, February 6, 2009. By providing the manpower, Special Olympics Hawaii was allowed to run several fundraising activities at the festival, which included a raffle and auction. The prizes offered were autographed sports memorabilia, the top prizes were two footballs, one signed by the AFC football players and the other the NFC football players participating in the Pro-Bowl. View the photos here!

Roosevelt High School Leo Club members manned several games (field goal kick and passing and the quarterback challenge), the information tent, assisted the football clinic and cleaned up trash during the festival. Several thousand people took advantage of the event, including children who received a passbook and when completed by playing all the games available, received a prize at the end. Leo members also had the opportunity to seek autographs from football players, Pro-Bowl cheerleaders and meet with cheerleaders from Japan. (Story & Photos by Steven Yoshimura - Chinatown)

D50 Webmaster's Take on the 3rd Cabinet Meeting

February 7, 2009 the 3rd Quarter 2008-2009 Cabinet Meeting was held at the Kilauea Military Camp. Rather than reporting about the same ‘ol, same ‘ol stuff related to the meeting, I’ll point out a few things that some of us normally take for granted. Let me started by thanking Region IV Chair Jim Bryan for hooking me up with a plane ride, and Lion Kin Ching for ground support via SUV.

Well, my first point will draw your attention to the early morning sky while in the airplane to Hilo. Here in this picture (above left), the sun did NOT rise for those under the clouds. Through my small window viewing port, you get to see what happens over the horizon at 6am. Majestic I think, and then passing out in the chair for about 20 minutes. It was my intention to get some zzzz before the flight, but that never came, thus I was on my 24 hour day…Zowee! See more of my pictures!

Before the meeting, I guzzled down 4 large cups of coffee, in the hopes that Mr. Sandman doesn’t visit me at some critical time during the meeting proceedings. Luckily, the morning java worked as planned. Anyway, I cruised around the room and snapped this shot of the Waikoloa Lions Classic Car and Truck Show T-shirt. I thought this was a cool looking shirt, and “hip”, something that the Hawaii Lions need to get more involved with to draw attention of the post baby boomers. The VIBRANT colors get away from the dreary yellow and navy blue on some of our Lions designs. Something to think about when you create your propaganda.

PID Herb Watanabe got this nice and toasty fire rolling for members that were coming in from the brisk high 50 degree temperature that was outside. Rarely, do I get an opportunity to witness a fireplace with a REAL fire. Kid you not, this is the SECOND time…the first was at the Volcano House a few years back. I know of a few friends that have fireplaces, but only put candles. Hey, the Amish have fake fireplaces…seen that commercial? Standing within a 20 foot radius kept you warm.

My last noted picture really impressed me. This occurred after most members left the luncheon, while Lion Kin & I were heading out to catch our plane. I have respect for this person as he leads the band of Hawaii Lions for the 2008-2009 year. Even more so, a definitive higher admiration of someone that can get his/her hands dirty, setting a GREAT example for all to follow. Winston Churchill said…”The price of greatness is responsibility”, it shows here. DG, you da MAN! (Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster – Irwin Santos)

DG & VDG Hospitality Room at Kilauea Military Camp

Posted February 9, 2009

Party, party, party! What a great way for the District 50 Lions to celebrate at the KMC forum! On Friday evening, February 6, 2009, the Akaka Falls and Waikiki 2000 Lions put it all together for a fun-filled social function with great camaraderie and "talk story" sessions in the hospitality room - "Building 76." See the photos!

After an evening of inspirational speeches by Hawaii County Mayor, William Kenoi (photo above left), and several Lions describing their "Passion of Lionism", the KMC Forum attendees were treated to an evening of good food and liquid refreshments, courtesy of District Governor Shannon Ching and Vice District Governor Alan Garson and their respective clubs.

The Waikiki 2000 and Akaka Falls Lions Clubs members served great foods and liquid refreshments to over 140 attendees at Friday’s Forum. PID Herbert Watanabe provided his famous Portuguese Bean Soup, Akaka Falls provided their homemade smoked meat, as well as several other home-made side dishes and desserts. DG Shannon provided the venue and the wines, and several other Lions and their clubs contributed beer and other refreshments. Our apologies for not keeping track of who donated what but it was much appreciated!

With so much business to conduct at the cabinet meeting the following morning, only a few remained until the midnight hour. (Story by VDG Alan Garson, Photos by Jan Asano & Len Shimabukuro - Akaka Falls, Photo of Mayor Billy Kenoi by George Ito - Hilo)

Region IV Lions Score on Super Clean-Up Day at the ARC in Hawaii

Posted February 9, 2009

The Super Bowl may have been on Sunday, February 1, but Saturday, January 31, 2009, will be known as the Super Clean-up Day!

The 50 "MVP" members of Aiea, Aloha Pono, Chinatown, Honolulu, Kamehameha, Moanalua and Pearl City Lions Clubs and the Damien and Roosevelt Leos joined together on Saturday January 31 to do a "SUPER" clean up the offices and grounds of The ARC in Hawaii, an organization devoted to helping Hawaii's people with intellectual or developmental disabilities with residential and community-based services. Hardworking Lions and Leos swept and mopped floors, dusted and wiped clean all shelves and tables, cleaned all windows and screens, raked all outside grounds and even power-washed all the windows and walkways.
See the Damien Leos in action!

This is a service project that the Lions and Leos of District 50 Hawaii Lions from Region IV Zone I and guests from Zone II Lions clubs have been "tackling" twice a year for the past 3 years as they try to keep The ARC in Hawaii spic and span for all their clients. Thank you to all the clubs who donated snacks and drinks and to the Kailua Round Table Pizza for donating yummy cheese and pepperoni pizzas for all the volunteers. Everyone scored a touchdown and was a winner in this community-service project!

Superbowl with Lions and Supes

Posted February 8, 2009

February 1, 2009...THE Superbowl Party to be at!! Hands down. I thought I share my story as I invited a “few” people...about 200 showed up, including several Lions. Clarence & PDG Cecelia Izuo got a picture with our guest of honor, a wild boar trapped 3 months ago, and fattened up feed. It was nicely seasoned with red wine, rosemary, and garlic. After roasting for 5 hours, the succulent meat was chopped up by yours truly. Also hovering over a slow flame was a slab of New York steak. Yummy!

Ah, but many other tasty things appeared at our party. Lion Alan Niwao brought us tako poke to join in the other 50+ potluck dishes that graced the buffet table. Plus, there were 2 kegs of beer on tap, 6 HD viewing areas, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, tennis court, and boat dock to kick back and view Enchanted Lake. Guests got to participate in a raffle at half-time. Take a look at the pictures!

The annual party is hosted by the owner of Player's Sports Bar, Vernon Luke. He opens up his mansion every year. I coordinate the invites and run the kitchen. Sometimes I cook for a few hundred people, but this year, it was Pot Luck. It's usually a long week, but really worth the time when you get to hear the cheering and the kudos for such a big spread of Aloha. Until next year...(Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster – Irwin Santos)

"The ARC In Hawaii" Cleanup Project

Posted February 6, 2009

Clubs from Region IV, Zone 1 conducted a clean-up project at the Association of Retarded Citizen’s (ARC) facility on Diamond Head Road on 31 January 2009 from 9:00 to 11:00 am. Approximately 50 Lions, companions in service and Leos showed up for the project. Clubs participating were the Aloha Pono Lions Club, Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club, Kamehameha Lions Club, Lions Club of Honolulu, Moanalua Lions Club, Damien High School Leo Club and Roosevelt High School Leo Club. We also had the privilege of having members from the Aiea Lions Club, notably Lion Wendell Hosea, and the Pearl City Lions Club, Cabinet Treasurer Lion Chris Tamura, helping out at the project.

The project provided facility and ground maintenance for the ARC; cleaning and mopping classrooms and offices, cleaning windows, power washing sidewalks and walls, cleaning and raking the grounds of the facility. This project helped save the ARC funds for maintenance that can be used for more important activities. (Story & Photos by Steven Yoshimura - Chinatown)

PROJECT DANA: Service to the Ederly

Posted February 6, 2009

At Waikiki 2000 induction meeting on November 9, 2008, Lion Jan invited Project Dana Speakers Cindy Osajima and Mike Hirano, as well as Project Dana client, Ingeborg Shields, the widow of Lion Tom Shields who wrote our Lion Pledge. Since then, W2K has adopted Project Dana as part of our Service affiliation. Click here to see up close views of the baskets and more!

During the Christmas holidays, W2K participated in Project Dana's "Caring For the Kupuna." W2K project chair, Lion Jan Offner, collected donation of toiletries, towels, and other non-perisable items and with the help of volunteers Judy Osato and Kate Shigetani, and Lions Marie and June created 24 "baskets" for the elderly.

On Sunday, January 25, 2009, Lion Jan attended a Volunteer Service Day program and spoke to the audience of Waikiki 2000 LC's affiliation with Project Dana. She shared her role as a provider of service to a client, her role as a Lion aligned with Project Dana. Ourlatest venture is placing a collection box for used eye glasses with Project Dana. COMREL: 209th ASB & 25th CAB Support Hearing Screening

Posted February 6, 2009

January was another groundbreaking time for the Mililani Lions. We were the first Lion’s club to conduct hearing screening on Oahu this fiscal year. Credit goes to Berta Jenkins for taking the ball and sprinting to get this done.

We screened 100 Kipapa 2nd graders on January 21st with the help of10 Lions, 8 soldiers, 4 parent volunteers. We were fortunate to have DG Shannon Ching and PDG Roy Nishida at the hearing screening to oversee our procedures. Lion Sam Fisk (Ewa Beach), Lions Kaye Stang and Harriet (Lualualei/Waianae) participated. (Story by Winston Watarai - Mililani, Photos by CW2 Christopher Mahoney). Click this link to download the full-size poster!

Additional information from CW2 Christopher Mahoney, BDE Targeting Officer of the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade:

Members of the 209th Aviation Support Battalion (ASB) of the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB), continues their partnership with Mililani through participation in Civic Organizations. The CAB supported the Mililani Lions Club Hearing Screening program, by providing 9 soldiers at a hearing screening event at Kipapa Elementary School on January 21. Screening began at 0830 and ran for 4 hours. The Soldiers manned a reception station and 4 screening station with Lions Club members, parent, and teacher volunteers.

Administration of this hearing test was the first of its kind on the Island of Oahu. If successful, further testing opportunities will be made available in the community partnering with the Lions Club. This January 21 event focused on the Kipapa's 2nd grade students. There were 5 classes with over 100 students tested. Approximately 2% of this population were referred to parents for possible hearing problems. These hearing problems may adversely affect learning. The screening leads to further diagnoses and treatment enabling improved education, increased student confidence and learning.

Night in Chinatown Parade

Posted January 28, 2009

The Chinatown Merchants Association sponsored the Night in Chinatown on 24 January 2009, to help celebrate the Chinese New Year (26 January 2009) with a street fair on Maunakea and Pauahi Streets and a parade along Hotel Street, which started from Richards Street (next to the State Capitol) and ending on River Street. See the Parade photos!

The Honolulu Chinatown Lions Club and Roosevelt High School Leo Club formed a marching unit, with 70 other organizations, which included the Miss Chinatown and Narcissus Pageant courts, and marched along the parade route distributing 55 pounds of free candy to the public.

Thanks to Lion PDG Ernest Chang for organizing the Honolulu Chinatown Lions and Roosevelt High School Leo Club’s participation in this annual event. (Story & Photos by Steven Yoshimura - Chinatown)

Hearing Screening Training on Maui

Posted January 28, 2009

The Lions Clubs of Maui spent Saturday morning Janurary 24, 2009 with DG Shannon Ching and PDG Roy Nishida learning hearing screening procedures at the Maui Electric Company Auditorium. DG Shannon brought four brand new audiometers that will stay on Maui to do the screenings. After going over goals, objectives, and target populations, it was time to set up the audiometers and get some hands on training. View the pictures!

After three Lions in a row failed the test for me, I thought my machine was broken. So I tested myself and I could hear all the three varying tones at 25dB in each ear. I think that half the Lions present will need hearing aids. Thank goodness they can all still see the pages of written material that was handed out.

After the training was completed DG Shannon talked to the group about his goals and objectives for the year. DG Shannon and PDG Roy were presented gifts from the zone and lunch was served.

After lunch, DG Shannon had visitations with each club individually. PDG Roy left to meet with family on Maui. For those that don't know, PDG Roy was born and raised on Maui and is a past member of the Haleakala Lions Club.

Thirty two Lions attended the excellent presentations and we would all like to thank DG Shannon and PDG Roy for taking time from their busy schedules to meet with us. (Story & Photos by Mark Mizuno - Haleakala)

District Governor Visits Hilo Clubs

Posted January 28, 2009

On January 22, 2009 D.G. Shannon Ching visited four clubs of Region 7 in a pupu hour. The Hilo Lions came with 8 Lions, Crescent City with 3 Lions, Akaka with 3 Lions and Puna Lions with 1. Also present was ZC Robert Kawakone. The event was chaired by Lion Glenn Shigehara of Akaka Falls Lions Club, who did a great job getting the pupus and the Governor’s gift. See more pictures!

The informal atmoshpere of Kow’s Restaurant provided for a worthwhile exchange of ideas. Of particular interest was a proposed amendment to the constitution that will not require the convention to be held on the neighbor islands. Everyone was concerned that if this were to happen, the interest in Lionism on the neighbor island would decrease and membership might drop dramatically. (Story & Photos by George Ito)

Pearl City Lions Honor Companions

Posted January 28, 2009

Our Companions-in-Service, the most important persons in our lives, were honored at a luncheon held on January 10 at the Seafood Village, Hyatt Regency Waikiki. They are indeed our support and inspiration, the winds beneath our wings. They help to bring greatness and vitality to our club. It was a pleasure to recognize them for the million things that they do. (Photo at right; Sherilyn & Khelsey in a dazzling hula performance)

The program consisted of a scrumptious Chinese feast; romantic melodies by Kristyn Trombetta, a talented Pearl City High School freshman vocalist who has performed in Dare Day and The King and I; hula dances by Sherilyn Pepee and Khelsey Kaawaloa, from Pearl City Elementary School’s Halau Hula Olana; song and dance fest by Lion Calvin Ebesutani; and a world-class Valentine’s video by Lion Paul Kudo. Paul’s outstanding video consisted of pictures of companions’ weddings and the carefree days of their younger years, when they were in their prime. (Photo at left; A bountiful Chinese feast enjoyed by Lions Ken Takahashi & CIS Sayo, David Miyamoto & CIS Ethel, Wayne Morinaga & CIS Janice)

Our entertainment package was boosted with hula dances by CIS Nattie Abad, vocals by Lion Warren Hiromoto, and the rhythmic gyrations of go go dance trio, Lions Warren, President Alice Kudo and Stan Wachi. (Photo at right; Disco ducks Calvin, Warren, Alice and Stan have all the moves)

A grand time was had by all attendees. Our companions, who were presented with long-stem roses, are definitely da best! (Story by Ira Tagawa - Pearl City)

They Have Arrived!

Posted January 28, 2009

The Koko Head Lions club has been lacking a club pin to represent us and for us to trade and give to others. I asked for and received permission from our club president, Lion Roger Izuka undertake this task. Numerous pictures were looked at and one was agreed upon by us.

This was cropped so that all that remained was the mountain itself. Much dialogue back and forth between yours truly and the designer occurred over a number of weeks.

A blackline master was done by the designer using the picture selected. Roger and I were extremely pleased that this was turning out perfectly.

The blackline master was then filled in with color. The final proof sheet was approved and the pin went into production. Version 2, with the name of the club and its chartered year was added and the design of the pin was completed. Final.jpg

Lion Irwin Santos clued me into Vini Sassone of PINSOURCE.COM who makes all of his pins as the one to do the job. Check with Lion Irwin or with me and I will give you the contact information <<<1-800-678-9288>>>.

I am shown here pinning my president Roger Izuka, with the first pin. Pin number two is mine. Each club member will purchase a minimum of two pins. I already have the pleasure of reserving one for Lion Wendell Hosea and one each for Lioness’ Donna Tamasese and Karen Tsukiyama. Will gladly pin them when next I see them.

Martin Luther King Service Day with the Pearl City Lions

Posted January 28, 2009

Thanks to the District 50 website, the word got out to all the Lions Clubs of Hawaii to participate in the initiatives from IP Al Brandel and President Barack Obama to do community service on Martin Luther King Day. On the morning of MLK service day, then President-elect Obama visited a homeless shelter, rolled up his shirt sleeves and helped to paint the walls and cabinets. He said everyone could help to bring about CHANGE for a better life by volunteering with community service everywhere. He mentioned that a website has been setup to locate on-going and future community service programs wherever you live simply by typing in your zip code. (www.usaservice.org). See the photos!

Members of the Pearl City Lions Club got inspired on MLK day and picked up used eyeglasses from collection boxes, fed a homeless man lunch and painted-over 14 areas of large graffiti tags along 100 yards of the concrete wall along Kamehameha Hwy in Pearl City.

Although these may not have been impressive or high profile tasks or projects, they still help the people in the community or elsewhere in some way and at the same time continue to maintain the Lions sense of Pride in the greatest service organization. It would be great to showcase the community service work of the small clubs.

Small clubs may not have the resources nor the manpower to take on large or high-profile projects, they are seldom showcased in the media. However, as proud Lions, they still volunteer and help improve their communities and it is high time we hear their "ROAR"! (Story & Photos by Paul Kudo - Pearl City)

Leadership Forum Final Days

Posted January 20, 2009

It’s OVER! A sigh of relief from an engaging and overwhelming weekend at the Leadership Forum. There was so much to do, and tons of information to absorb, that one weekend was simply not enough. Sunday was a continuation of the program, where yours truly got to do a quick presentation of navigating the hawaiilions.org website. View Day 2 -Photo Gallery 1, and Day 3 - Photo Gallery 2.

Photos by Donna Tamasese
Day 2 Day 3 - Speeches
Day 3 - Class Pictures Day 3 - Closing Certificates

Through the hard work, we did have opportunities to take a break and also get treated to an enormous Chinese 7-course dinner Saturday evening at Hung Won restaurant. The food kept coming; Peking Duck, Crispy Chicken, Roast Duck, Sea Bass with Vegetables, Gon Lo Mein, Sweet Sour Pork, Chicken Corn Soup, and Jin Dui. Being the cleanup guy, I had to eat for those that were watching their diets. Still, there was lots of food to take home. I’m eating those leftovers as I write this story.

Upon completion, each of the participants received their “Doctorate of Leadership." It’s been awhile since I’ve been awarded a certificate…uh long time. Anyway, this came after a grueling Sunday of 5-minute presentations provided by each person…33 of us. Everybody had to suck it up and get in front of the class delivering their topics. I chose to talk about “thinking out of the box.” It fared well until Murphy’s Law kicked in and my technical prop…my ACE in the hole, sputtered. AUWE! For those of you not in the know, I presented the group a way to make the District 50 website, vision impaired enabled. Check out this link, http://www.neospeech.com pop in some text and click PLAY. Think about the possibilities!

President Robin Hauanio of Puna (photo at right) was selected by his peers as the Lion that stood out. He was given a plaque that was once handed to Past International Director Mel Nakamura. The award said “Passion”, and that’s what Robin displayed during the forum. Congratulations!

All “Doctors” will go back to their clubs carrying valuable information to share, conveying what has been taught. (Story & Photos by D50 Webmaster – Irwin Santos & Donna Tamasese)

District 50 Leadership Institute Forum Day 1

Posted January 18, 2009

The JAIMS Facility in Hawaii Kai housed 30+ Hawaii Lions attending the District 50 Leadership Forum. Here’s the story of Day 1, January 17th, 2009…Visit the Photo Gallery!

For me, the morning starting out by WAKING UP LATE! Auwe! However, I managed to speed my way down just in time to grab a few breakfast snacks from the lunch room, minutes before the sessions began. A tremendous amount of information was dispensed and these were the topics covered: “We are the One”, "Diversity & Team Building", "Communication Skills", "Conflict Resolution & Managing Change", and "Creativity."

This all day event was like attending school…even so more profound was that it had several classmates of mine from over 30 years ago, Lions Scott Sakata (left of photo) from Hawaii Kai and Charles Miu (right of photo) of Aloha Pono. Not only are they part of the class, the seating arrangement made it even more surreal, as Charlie sat right in front of me, and Scott was to my immediate left. What are the odds of that happening? I was curious and had to find out the answer…based on the following…we define a sub-set of n favorable elements, where n is less than or equal to N. Probability is defined as the rapport of the favorable cases over total cases, or calculated as: P = n / N.

Therefore, using approximated facts…
P1 = 30 years approx. 10,000 days, P2=1.2 million people in Hawaii, of that only P3=1800 are Lions; 33 participants were present, and factor P4=32 possible seats in the class other than mine. Now that is just for ONE person, so P5=1/2:
In this case, PTOTAL = 1 / (P1 x P2 x P3 x P4) OR PTOTAL = 1 / (1/10000) x (1/1200000) x (1/1800) x (1/32) x (1/2)
PTOTAL= 1/ (.0001 x .000000083 x .000055 x .03125 x .5) = 140197000000000000
OR 140,197,000,000,000,000 : 1 >>> 140 + Quadrillion to ONE! Hmm...karmic coincidence?

Anyway, through the course of the forum, the faculty kept the class moving along with interaction between attendees. One of the exercises included tying up select members of groups. Other students not tied up, observed how the tie-ees, got untied, if they actually figured out their escape. Local Entertainer Ampy Cabico – Kapolei City, and Future Manoa Waioli President Nadine Nishioka (Photo above left), demonstrated their Houdini skills. It was revealed by Lion Nadine that back in small kid time, she wanted to wear the yellow vests like the OLD MEN had while watching the Lions in a parade.

Of the many sessions, I found “Conflict Resolution & Managing Change” a winner. Our group consisting of Lions Wayne, Scott, and Kevin were presented this problem “We Always Do it That Way.” It was a case of providing a solution to encourage older members to embrace new ideas from new members. We came up with similar solutions to Lion Mark Gardner & Charlie Miu had (photo above right). Check the photo gallery for our offering.

It wasn’t all work and there were opportunities to take a break. At lunch, I presented several Honorary “Na Maka ‘o Liona” pins. These went out to VDG Alan Garson, PID Mel Nakamura, PDG Merv Wee, and DG Shannon (more info on the Voice of the Lions message board).

After all was said and done on day one, the majority of the class headed on over to Lion Mel Aoki’s house for an ono steak dinner. Delicious food and I even got to take home a plate…which I’m eating as I write this story.

Special Aloha…Thanks to Lion Donna Tamasese for supplying her camera as mine went kaput (Story by D50 Webmaster Irwin Santos, Photos by Donna Tamasese – Honolulu & Irwin Santos).

Hearing Screening Testing on the Big Island

Posted January 16, 2009

Region 7 Hawaii Lions attended a Hearing Screening Training on Saturday, January 10, 2009 at 1990 Kinoole Street in Hilo. DG Shannon Ching and PDG Roy Nishida conducted the training for 32 lions and one CIS member. According to PDG Roy, it was the largest turnout for the training so far. Akaka Falls logged eight members and one CIS, Crescent City had one member, Hilo had nine members, Puna had one member and Waiakea had 13 Lions present. All of Region 7 Presidents Kent Inouye, Dwayne Mukai, Clayton Chong, Robin Hauanio and Abe Kubo, PDG George Kodani, PZC Cedric Mitsui and Present ZC Robert Kawakone were in attendance. Region 7 views this as a very important issue by the large number in attendance. See the Photo Gallery!

Annual hearing screening should be performed on school aged children (5-18 years old) with focus on ages 6-8 years old to help identify any significant hearing loss. PDG Roy and DG Shannon explained the forms, method and process of hearing screening/rescreening, the target groups and that there are four audiometers for the Island to use. PDG Roy shared that Kauai does Sight and Hearing screening together. (Photo above left with VDG Alan Garson and his wife Priscilla).

According to the 2008 guidelines, hearing screening is not a diagnostic procedure. It identifies those who pass and those who fail. Those who fail are in need of further medical and/or audilogical assessment. We would need to acquire an Audiologist to assist during the screening.

Everyone had a chance to try out the audiometer which is an instrument that can measure hearing one frequency (pitch) at a time at different intensity (loudness) levels. It was humorous to observe some of the Lions being tested on the audiometer couldn't hear the tone while bystanders could. DG Shannon tested Lions on the tympanometer (pure tone). It also seems that most needed to have ear cleaning due to wax buildup.

As with most trainings, lunch and refreshments were enjoyed by all. (Story by Glen "Shige" Shigehara - Akaka Falls, Photos by Jan Asano - Akaka Falls)

Hawai`i Center Independent Living

Posted January 11, 2009

Lion RC Jim Bryan, Region IV Kamehameha Lions Club, got a warm welcome, as well as a pleasant "ear-full" at a recent meeting with the visually impaired and disabled in Honolulu. RC Jim was asked to speak about the Hawai`i Lions at the January meeting of the Hui Kupuna VIP at the Hawai`i Center Independent Living on Kuwili Street. Louise Horio, the Director of the State Independent Living Council, had been seeking a speaker from the Lions for months before the invitation was finally forwarded to RC Jim through his dual role as the District 50 Public Relations Chair. The room was packed to capacity as the group of citizens asked RC Jim to update them on Lions activities and service projects, followed by a lively question & answer session.

According to RC Jim, "I was blown away by the interest they had in Lionism and quickly realized what a poor job we've done to keep this segment of our community informed of our activities and programs. For example, they've been very disappointed that the Lions have not come up with a way to inform the blind community about our upcoming events and fundraisers. Think about it - - everything we publish about what we're doing is totally focused on people who can see. As one woman told me, 'We'd love to attend your fundraisers to support your clubs, but, we can't read your newsletters or websites to get the dates & times.' She's absolutely right, and, we need to do something about that."

RC Jim compiled a list of questions and concerns that he discussed with the group, promising he'd raise their issues at the upcoming D50 Leadership Institute as well as the February Cabinet Meeting. "After only an hour of discussion, it was clear to me that we have our work cut out for us. Lions that think our responsibility to the blind isn't as crucial as it was in years past are in for a rude awakening. I came away from this meeting with a true sense that our mantle as 'Knights of the Blind' is becoming tarnished. We have to make things right again for a segment of our community that still sees Lionism as a valuable and important resource."

Before leaving, RC Jim presented the Hui with a copy of our D50 "We Serve" documentary for their library, and, promised to return in the months ahead with a plan of action. (Story & Photo by Teresa Bryan - Kamehameha)

New Year's Eve Fireworks at Aloha Tower

Best Wishes to everyone in 2009! Lois (a.k.a. Karen) and I made our way to Aloha Tower for New Year’s Eve. We both got to take in the aerial fireworks display shot off a barge in Honolulu Harbor after a stop at my FAVORITE beer joint for a few rounds and a jig.

In the midst of looking through a crowd…thousand plus people in the immediate pier area adjacent to Gordon Biersch, no Hawaii Lion to be found. Anyway, I thought I share with you folks that last minute or so of the celebratory display. The show lasted just under 15 minutes with synchronized music to accompany. Radio DJ "Billy V" was the host for the night. Enjoy!
